Potvin & Mess became better players because of the C?

Yzerman got the c from pretty much day one.. so we will never know.

The C is just a letter.

i didn't want to come out in say it but thats exactly who poulin reminds me off
- NYI78

I'll say it...yeah, he reminds me of a younger DP, without the need to overplay the puck. And when DP actually listened to his coaches, his positioning and especially his rebound control improved exponentially in the 2006-07 season, before the Great Decline. Teachable issues.

not when you're wasting $4.5 Million a year($34 Million over next 8 years) with an amnesty buyout option and have RDP in B'port who is now the highest paid player in the AHL. With that money, a better coach(es) could be had as well as taking an impact player with a contract of $3.5million or so and they're STILL at the cap floor.
I'm not convinced this is all Charles' FU to the county. I just think he & Garth are inept and clueless and stubborn/arrogant.

He's pretty good. I actually like his game. Jumps in the play and he's not that bad in his own end.

I'm one of the guys that wants to see Vis gone. Guy is a great player but he should be gone by the deadline.
- Cptmjl

So, you'd rather trade him than extend him a couple of seasons if he wanted to stay? You'd rather have the team's best d-man this season traded away for a late first round or late second round draft pick rather than sign him to an extension?

Nope, but as leaders they made their teams better. Both are considered two of the greatest leaders in the modern era of this sport.

If we take it to the opposite, you could argue that Yashin as this teams Captain caused more problems. He wasn't seen as a decent leader. Some players likely resented the fact that he was chosen as the symbolic leader of this team all the while hitting the golf courses with Wang. How on earth would the team have chosen him to speak to mgmt about their dissatisfaction.

I see him turn over the puck a lot in his own zone as well. He just looks good compared to the rest of our D

I'll bring up a point as to why I think naming Tavares as Captain means something. The Captain of the team not only represents that team to the officials, but to team management as well. If there are issues the team needs to convey to the coach or GM, it's that team captain who typically goes in to speak. This isn't the 1970's or 1980's where teams used to vote for their Captains. That doesn't happen nowadays. Management typically names their Captain and they do so based on who they feel most comfortable with as liaison for the players and managment.
With Streit, I don't think you have a vocal enough player. I also doubt he garners the respect from the officials like a star such as JT will. It's JT's driven attitude that should be the symbolic representation of this franchise, not a quiet passive player such as Streit.

- keaner17

I'm going to say that JT needs to be captain of this team just bcs he should be, simple as that. I don't understand how anyone could disagree? There is zero reason to have to emphasize on this statement. I can't understand how this is even a debate?

Touche. But what teams are going to be willing to move PP QB's this summer, if any? Plus, why let Streit go or trade him and have to use picks/prospects to land another guy to fill his role?
- Jethro09

I NEVER want to just let a guy go.. If Streit or Vis are not signed by the trade deadline... move them. If they can resign one or both then do so, I was just saying that of the 2 Vis has been better this season & if there was a choice between signing one or the other.. id pick Vis.

Not as consistently as Streit does or any of the other turn over machines. He's not flawless don't get me wrong but he's pretty damn good for what he does.

I agree that he's not. I'm just saying that I don't want him gone, I'm resigned to the fact that Vis wants no part of this team. I have no problem trading Vis if Vis tells Snow he refuses to re-sign.

I spent a lot of time defending DP over the years but I will say, without the ability to play the puck, DP was only slightly above average even during 2006-07. It was his ability to play the puck that caused Milbury to trade Luongo away during the clutch and grab era of the NHL. DP's positioning was always a big problem for me as someone who coached a fair amount of goaltenders. The problem is, with some people, no matter how much you coach their positional play, their instincts often take over. DP was that way. Add in a terrible goaltending coach and sub par defense and you have a recipe for a fish out of water.

I think Poulin's biggest issue is playing time. The kid needs to see more time at the NHL level to adjust to the speed of the game. Ultimately if he can do that, his positioning SHOULD become more sound.

If I'm Snow I would have had this figured out last season with a plan to replace him, whether through our prospects or otherwise. Trade or sign a younger model whose play is not deteriorating. I just don't think Streit is that great. I know what his stats are before you throw them up in your next post, don't need to see them. I think his play at times has been God awful. I don't think he is that great on the PP, guy is a turn over machine but believe it or not I don't hate him. I just don't think he is close to a first pairing Dman nor do I think he should be captain of this team any longer IMO. Everyone was worried about signing a 28 year old winger who put up 67 points to a 4 year contract yet Streit sounds good with a three year contract? Just don't agree.

No one is debating that.. i agree with that.

The argument is that the C doesn't make the player a leader.

naturally they were leaders, which is why they were given the C. I don't think we can say the same about Streit. He's not a leader. He said himself he doesn't talk and prefers to lead by example. I've seen enough dips in his intensity while in his own zone that I'd prefer an intense guy like Tavares being the Captain of this team.
