I'm intrigued, but I hate to put Nino in that package. How is Ballard?
- Jethro09

left handed D-men, American
30, small at 5'11" 208lbs but he hits , blocks shots & plays a pretty solid 2 way game, hasnt really been that good number wise in Vancouver but was pretty decent in florida & phoenix, former first round draft pick.. so Garth will like that, signed for 2 more years at 4.2 a year

Canuck blogger.....

"Luongo to the Isles— book it

No sources on this one, but who needs those with all the obvious signs pointing in the Islanders direction.

- Isles are only two points out of the playoffs
- Isles are 28th in the NHL in goals against
- Isles have good, young NHL players that would fit Gillis asking price
- Isles have no Goalie right now and non in the wings that will ever be NHL starters
- The Isles I'm sure would love to dump DiPietro and have another team buy him out
- The Isles have the cap room to help the Canucks out.
- The Isles to get to the cap floor next year
- The Isle need another star whose name will sell tickets

Let's get Snow and Gillis together on this one and make it happen. The Isles fans deserve to have their team take a shot and the playoffs after years of not being relevant and John Taraves deserves to be on a team that wants to win instead of continually re-building.

To Vancouver- DiPietro (buyout at season end), Niederreiter, Bailey and Kichton
For
T NYI- Luongo and Ballard

The Islanders get the boost they need to make a run and make the playoffs as well as solve their revolving door that they have had in net for the past decade. Vancouver gets cap space and three of good prospects going forward. "

what do you all think?

- XxNYIxX

I'd do it a heartbeat...could make the playoffs with Luongo...and it would setup other deals like trading Nabokov and maybe Streit or Visnovsky...also it removes the black cloud DiPietro from the team...

Some day hopefully he'll be 35. Until then....

He'll turn 34 next week.

I'm going to say that JT needs to be captain of this team just bcs he should be, simple as that. I don't understand how anyone could disagree? There is zero reason to have to emphasize on this statement. I can't understand how this is even a debate?
- Cptmjl

I agree, tho this team is never one to do the obvious.
They have "a plan" and won't tell anyone what it really is.
Garth plays his hand so close to his vest that I don't think even HE can see the cards he's holding.

Seems like they will just go with what they have as long as they keep winning and stay close in the race for 8th. He won't make ANY moves. No sell off for assets and no moves to improve the possible playoff team.

Could just be a forward scout checking us out for our game next weekend, although that seems a little early. Not sure why the CAR scout is there, we don't play them til the 23rd and PHI plays neither team the rest of the season. Who knows what potential trade offers could be getting kicked around involving all teams though.

Maybe St. Louis will be JT's new RW. Just kidding.

copied and pasted my response to the Canucks blogger rather than redo it

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but as an Isles fan...I'd very seriously consider Ian's proposal for Luongo. After all the crap I've given him for crazy scenarios, the terrible length of Luongo's contract and how Ballard wouldn't be worth anything...

Let's take a look at it:

Luongo's contract is terrible BUT DP's is far worse and he's no longer an NHL goaltender. I'm sure Wang would absolutely love to not have to buy DP out at the end of the year.

Ballard...meh, overpaid however with streit, visnovsky both ufa's at the end of the year Ballard wouldn't be a terrible pick up. Our waiver wire defense should have been propped up with a couple of the kids in bridgeport but since Snow added more "depth" (bahaahaaha.) I suppose even Ballard could find a home.

the kids - Neiderreiter (agent demanded a trade) would be the real key here. Bailey, unfortunately, continues to show either a ton of talent or a ton of disinterest. Kichton may or may not be signed and could reenter the draft if the Isles don't pay up and give him what he wants.

So to summarize, the Isles lose:

disgrunted 5th overall pick, disgrunted defenseman who may not sign, and currently a bust of a 1st round pick, and most importantly, shed DP's contract without buying him out which may make their cheapskate owner feel like he could spend more dough.

the Isles gain:

Luongo (still likely to play at a reasonable level for a couple more years, then possibly a DP-like situation for slightly shorter time frame)
a defenseman who looks lost and is hated by his current coach, paid more than he's worth, yet still likely an upgrade over such valued pickups as Jeff Finley or Thomas Hickey.

with the amount of young prospects the Isles have (strome, nelson, kabanov) up front, losing neiderreiter and bailey may not be such a big loss. Christ. I'm going to have to eat my hat. Ian, I'd do this deal.

In response to me asking about Lee/Mayfield...

Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday
@dlawless9 Believe they intend to sign both. I think Lee will wind up with Isles. Not sure about Mayfield.

Any doubt in mayfield you trade him now

Also I wouldn't package niño for louongo, Lu is 35, declining and we aren't in win now.

I'd mug rather keep niño and trade like a 1st and mayfield for bishop or bernier

Staple said they intend to sign both...I'd have a hard time believing a college kid wouldn't want to start getting paid to play hockey ASAP.

His "not sure about Mayfield" comment was meant in terms of where he would report if/when he signs. Not referring to being unsure of Mayfield as a prospect.

That's a relief thanks chief. Regarding Luongo I see no way that trade happens and I rather not include Nino in the deal. I rather try for Bernier or Bishop.

Sign Padan. He'll be as good or better than Mayfield.
