Coburn would net a 1st rounder no question. So many teams are looking for help on defense and the market is fantastic with so many teams still in it.
- stveshdy

If Coburn can get you a first (which I dont think he can), I would be hopping on a horse from Winnipeg and ride down to Philly to celebrate.

It could be worse, how awesome would it have been if this was the year Philly was hosting the draft after a season like this, add in a Pens Cup run and hearing 28 times each team congratulate them.
- aosplayo

what would really be cool would be to have Crosby up on the draft podium with the Pitts selection in Philly

Andrej Meszaros is out indefinitely again with a shoulder injury suffered last night. Have to wonder if his season is indeed over.

- opeth_pa

His shoulder is F'd. His career is done. I saw the play last night and it was a incidental pick he set as Schenn wheeled up ice from behind the net. It could've been called an interference penalty but wasn't. If that kind of contact seperates your shoulder, pack it in.

You know there was a place last night where Mez got hit behind the net and you could see him sort of crumple. I was gonna say then" I wonder how long he will be out for " but didn't want to be Debbie Downer aka PLindberg31!

the breakaway given up right after Kimmo gets his silver stick for 1000 games pretty much sums up the year.

Nice save by Bryz, although I was surprised he made it. He doesn't really come out to challenge and move back with the forward like many goalies do.

Oh no, no... I didn't mean it like that. I was just pointing out that if TO can go from bottom-feeder in the East to playoff team, and a decent team at that, with the pices they have, we can do it to.

They didn't break the bank. They didn't make a massive multi-piece trade. They didn't get a first overall pick. All they're doing is using the right type of guys and have brought in toughness I can only recall the Flyers having pre-2004...

- Flyers_V88

Fair enough, excuse my playful sarcasm. I agree we can see improvement without blowing everything up or trading for the Second Coming.

Coburn would not net a 1st based on his play this year... but somebody may overpay based on past play and his physical skill set.
- flyguy12

I would take Coburn over Quincey. Coburn should be able to land the same type of deal. Which would be a 1st rounder.

Kimmo should have used his silver stick last night to play. He might've blocked the initial shot on the Hagelin goal.

With Mez now done for the year basically they should secure a top 3 pick!

Ian Epsilen just did a mock draft in his blog , here is are the top 10.

1- Florida Seth Jones Portland (WHL) D 6'3/208
2- Colorado Jonathan Drouin Halifax (QMJHL) LW 5'11/185
3- Philadelphia Nathan MacKinnon Halifax (QMJHL) C 6'0/182
4- Calgary Sean Monahan Ottawa (OHL) C 6'2/186
5- Tampa Bay Aleksander Barkov Tappara (FIN) C 6'2/205
6- Buffalo Valeri Nichushkin Chelijabinsk 2 (RUS) LW 6'4/196
7- Phoenix Elias Lindholm Brynas (SWE) C 5'11/181
8- Washington Nikita Zadorov London (OHL) D 6'5/230
9- Edmonton Darnell Nurse Sault Ste. Marie (OHL) D 6'3/189
10- Carolina Hunter Shinkaruk Medicine Hat (WHL) C/RW 5'11/174

I don't think you can go wrong with 1 of the top 3 but man Jones would make this season worth it. Then they need to figure out a way to trade for Byfuglien level dman or another high first to get Nurse go from there.

Somethign has to happen and I am sure they will address it ..they need a number 1 and 2 dman ..

I like coming up with hypothetic scenarios but I think this kind of an approach is fathomable.

-Trade Coburn at the deadline for a 1st and 3rd (or prospect), trade Feds
-Buyout Briere

-Take the mid to late 1st rounder from Coburn trade, Matt Read, prospect and send to Phx for Yandle and Boyd Gordon

-Sign Davis Drewske for an upgrade on the 3rd pair at a reasonable price
-Resign Gagne for around 2 mil (maybe under)
-Sign a Victor Stalberg/Drew Miller or if more money is available Clark Mcarthur/Mason Raymond

Draft best available with top 5 pick.

You could also plug in Shattenkirk and a piece from St. Louis. I think we can target those two guys without having to deal Coots or Schenn, maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think it's unfair to wonder whether Meszaros' body can continue to withstand the rigors of NHL hockey. Link: http://www.philly.com/phi...ros-out-indefinitely.html

I used to defend Coburn ... but no longer do. He's a big guy who doesn't use his size effectively, and he's a good skater who rarely wants to bring the puck up the ice. That's oh for 2.

His value may never be higher than it is right now.

- FlyerGuy

Coburn is 18th in the NHL in hits among defenseman. And honestly, I don't want him skating the puck up ice. I want him passing it off to the forwards, and let them bring the puck up ice.

I think the possibility exists that he could net a first, if there is a team that is in need of a defenseman for a playoff run. But in my opinion, unless it's a very high first round pick. It would be a big mistake to trade Coburn for a draft pick.

I pray to God the Flyers don't consider getting a player like Byfuglien.
