Isn't Markam (sp) a big possibility right now?
- celata29

Markham will probably get an expansion team. League will make a boatload from expansion fee for another toronto team.

Ya ya......... i know, Leafs will not allow it. I believe they will.

Markham is in Leafs territory. If they did manage to get a team they would have to pay one hell of a premium.

Don't they need 66 or 75% of the vote to get rid of him? Not enough "rich" teams to overcome the expanding middle ground and bottom end.
- p_zub

Not sure about that. I know they needed 75% for the CBA negotiations. I don't know if that applies to them being able to fire him.

Then you get into the whole debate of whether they would be able to be competive. If not competitive then the franchise would die.

Catch 22 for the rich clubs.

- faceto27

I do wonder why Major League Baseball, which is always held up as the prime example of inequality in pro sports, doesn't seem to have teams dying off.

It's often said that the small market MLB teams can't compete with the big spenders, and yet, they hang around.

I think that brings us to the main issue at the core of the NHL's problems: hockey is not as popular as baseball. Baseball can sustain these small market teams because there's still a demand to see baseball in the US.

Is hockey popular enough in North America to sustain a 30 team league? Is there any collective bargaining agreement that could ever solve the NHL's problems?

Could you ever institute a system that allows balance between the Maple Leafs, Rangers, and Canadiens on one hand and the Coyotes, Lightning, and Panthers on the other?

If so, I've yet to see it.

I would hope so also, but if given the choice of Bozak at 4 mil or Jokinen at 3 mil. I choose the latter.
