Terry Murray gets team to finals, gets fired for making ill advised comment. Peter laviolette gets owned by the Atlantic division and both Florida teams, still has a job, amazing.

Yeah, it seems like every now and then Hartnell gets into a funk and people want him gone...until he starts potting goals and then it is quickly forgotten. At least this time he kind of has an excuse (his foot). I think Harts and a lot of other players will look a lot better when the ship is righted.
- exlund

yea i definitely don't want to land in the "hartnell sucks trade him" crowd

but if a rebuild is truly underway, he seems like a logical candidate to get shipped out. or at least he would without the movement clause

Hartnell has bounced back from bad seasons before (the year he got divorced) so I am willing to cut him some slack. All teams need vet leadership and he usually keeps the locker room loose. Even if they were in a rebuild (I am more in the "its a bump" crowd) I'd be hesitant to deal harts unless it is one of those hockey trades that totally make sense.

I don't think we're looking at a rebuild...more like a reset. New coach and mentality/identity, a piece or two on D and this thing can work within the next few years and Hartnell is what, 30? I don't see why he can't be part of the mix..you need some vets to go with the youth.

Curious about your ranking for the top 5 prospects in this draft? I'm starting to do a lot more reading on the draft earlier this year for some reason.
- ravishingone

OB is better versed than me, but here's my top 10(not just for Flyers needs)

1. Nathan MacKinnon C/W
2. Seth Jones D
3. Jonathan Drouin LW
4. Valeri Nichushkin RW
5. Sean Monahan C
6. Alexander Barkov C
7. Elias Lindholm C
8. Darnell Nurse D
9. Risto Ristolainen D
10. Ryan Pulock D

In the case of the Flyers, if I'm at 6 and my top 5 are gone, I'd be willing to maybe "reach" for one of the defensemen.

i honestly don't know. that's the tough part in these circumstances. i don't think they're definitely in THAT deep of a hole, but i can't say that for sure. so i think the idea should at least be brought up

i'd think making this determination is the hardest part (or most important) of a gm's job. being able to accurately asses where your team is, in the big picture

Well, I won't talk about the giant erection I have when I think about getting a top 5 pick in this draft.

lavi got them to the finals, had already won a cup and murray's flyers were owned by DET...

i hear ya... definitely not saying the above is wrong. my point was just that i'd sooner go the "sell assets like hartnell" route than the "give up on the kids" route

My sister was "friendly" with Bernie's daughter-not great friends, but they knew each other enough to hang out socially. At some event or another my sister and brother in law met Bernie, and my brother in law is annoyed to this day when I mention it, because he says Bernie spent the entire time trying to hit on my sister.

I've met Bernie a handful of times-meet and greet type stuff-and I don't think he can help himself

Yeah but Murray got fired for saying out loud what we all saw. Detroit was a machine, granted, but that series should never have been a sweep.

When it comes to management decisions and trades one only needs to look into the decision to ship Bob out....In return we have two backup goalies whom basically cannot be played unreal. Kick in the gut to see Bob excel if freakin Columbus!! Its probably payback for the Carter trade lol.

That stuff on lavi 's resume looks a tad dry, a formaldehyde treatment is in order. Also he didn't win a cup here, IMO that too should not excuse poor performance even if he did win one here.

Thanks, I'm pretty confident they will be in the top 5. They cannot handle adversity at all right now. How good can MacKinnon be? As good as G or better?

One needs to look at what led to that decision. Laviolette went into the playoffs with Bobrovsky as his starter. By the second game, Bob was the third string goalie. He criminally mishandled his goalies in the 2011 playoffs, which led to Snider declaring that they would fix the goalie position. That led to Bryz getting a 9 year deal and Bob knowing he'd never get a real shot to start here.

Can they be played? I'm not convinced they cannot. After all bob turned in the best performance if the Boston series after Lavy parked him in the press box for leighton. Another thing this coach does that drives me crazy; constant mismanagement of goaltenders. I still can't believe he won a cup juggling tenders. Who knows maybe he reinvented the wheel that year.

As good, if not a bit better. Depends. Do you think Giroux is better than John Tavares? Because that's who MacKinnon compares to-and MacKinnon is a better skater.

i know, but i just couldn't amen that one because murray's never won anything. also, while i'd be on board w/ a coaching change, homer knows the off season was a clusterphuck and bryz has been uneven.

i would have canned lavi before the break and tried to make a run...
