Ryan is proven Coots is not....plain and simple as many have posted already

That is true. But Giroux originally came in as a winger as well. Not saying all wingers can play center, but I've seen both play (only in the WJC) and Drouin was dynamic every time on the ice while MacKinnon, when he did get playing time, was a non-factor. I see them as the difference between Eberle and RNH. One's very explosive and can make something out of nothing, while the other is a very good player but doesn't appear to have the ability to be a game changer.

MacKinnon had injury issues this year as well. We'll see what happens in the NHL. Both could end up as busts for all we know.

I agree and disagree. I think that in the case of Bryzgalov, Snider mandated the change. He didn't go out and say, "Homer, sign this guy!" but he made it abundantly and publicly clear that he wanted a big time goalie.

I also feel that Snider played a role in the trades of Richards and Carter. He is very involved.

- Jsaquella

Well, the trades of Carter and Richards were boons to the team - or should be in the long-term. The Bryzaster that is the Flyers' goalie situation - even since Bryz arrived - has more to do with Laviolette, IMO. Bobrovsky should be here with a veteran backup. Biron would have been the perfect guy when he was UFA two summers ago. I know I said I wanted to get Nabokov from the Isles, but that was based on the assumption he was unhappy there. He has since re-signed there, so...

Anyhoo, I'm too near-apathetic at this point. Just gonna ride it out and try to enjoy the sport with a less-fan mindset. Less frustration that way. Less enjoyment, but hey! I wasn't really enjoying that part of it this season.

I think Holmgren is given the GM reins, but under the condition that he fulfills certain demands from the owner. However, when those demands include four enormous contract offers over the past two summers (the only one of which ended up in donning the Flyers orange was Bryz), it kind of handcuffs you in making other moves, or in taking the team in a consistent direction.
- BulliesPhan87

Certainly, though I think Homer going after Suter and Weber was not based on a directive from above. That was trying to replace the injured Chris Pronger.

Yeah...won't matter cause we're drafting Jones #1 overall anyway. After we draft him, replace Lavi with Nolan, buyout Bryz and install Heeter as our starter, we should just about have the Cup locked up. At that point, just a matter of how long our dynasty extends past the 2030/2031 season.

I was on board with getting Ted Nolan in 2009-10 if they hired him instead of Lavi, but not now. I want a new guy from the junior leagues to grow with this young team.

They were boons to the team. Snider's involvement isn't a given to be negative. But it does tie the GM's hands to a certain extent.

There would have to be more pieces involved or another trade made to secure a defenseman for me to be OK with it. They can't just trade Couturier+ for Ryan and be done with it. They need to flip another winger for a defenseman for it to make sense.

Not sure if I am for it or against it. It's an interesting debate for sure.

- Jsaquella

How about this as a deadline deal?

To Montreal: Couturier, Talbot
To Philly: Beaulieu, 3 out of the following (Collberg, Kristo, Thrower or Ellis)

A pick or marginal player either way to balance it out. Maybe a Harry Z.

Gives Montreal some ammu against Pittsburgh's arms buildup, and as a plus their Francs with long-term cost certainty. Montreal would have a solid chance with Coots and Max.

Flyers get much top pair potential in Beaulieu and some other solid prospects, especially in D.

Oh, no question. GM of an NHL franchise must age one similarly to being president of the US. (Ok, being dramatic there. Sorry.)

I think you're right about the reasoning behind it, but I disagree that it wasn't from above. I think Snider got impatient about replacing Pronger, and saw a closing window for humangous money offers.

All I know about Spott was, again, from the WJC. A lot of people in Canada wanted to crucify him when his All Star team didn't even medal.
