A couple important pieces you're forgetting for "your" Oilers roster '13/'14 and that's team toughness that can play. This team is still grossly small and not strong whatsoever and therefore will continue to get pushed around game in game out.

I'm not sure how hemsky and smid for gaborik would ever help the Oilers. Sure Gaborik is a good player but this is a guy on the back half of his career. Not only that, he would be taking over a position of one of our core young guys. Top 6 players are not what we need, it's bottom 6 that needs all the work. We need a good decent sized faceoff winning centre, a big 4th line centre that can move a puck, and 1-2 more left handed puck moving D....And a real life starter in goal. Someone that could steal games when the team is having an off day.

I agree with everything you wrote except for trading Smid..if Oilers can get him under contract for under 3.5 (I'm thinking 3.35) then they gotta hang onto him..
He blocks an insane amount of shots every year, he's a team guy..maybe 3.35 is a little overpaid..so what, he's a Veteran defenceman who can play 20 effective minutes a night, keep him on this very young young team.

That makes no sense. That is like saying that Toronto's first round would have been traded if someone wanted it. People want them, the offer just isn't there.

Plus you have to save your next 3 first rounders in case boston drafts a career second line player that you can give an offer sheet for.

I will say this, PIT paying 2 2nd rders for Murray raises Whitney's trade value. I didn't think EDM could squeeze a 3rd out of a team, but a 2nd rider might be likely
