Why is that irrelevant? He had 36 goals the year prior when Roy had his best season statistically.

Vanek's problem has never been who his center is, its been his overall style of play. He either takes too many games off, or comes into the season completely out of shape. His disappearing acts have nothing to do with who his center is.

I agree with that.
He takes too much of a beating to be reliable every game.
I think that's a huge part of why he goes into droughts.

The Sabres need a guy like Ryan Callahan to be their leading player.

Yea he does take a beating, problem is that he is paid like he is head and shoulders above guys like Pominville or even Cody or Ennis, but game to game he doesn't play that much better

I disagree , when he slumps, he really slumps, to the point where he is virtually hurting the team. When he is on his game it doesn't matter who he's playing with he will score

Without Malkin, his production drops, and I believe enough to make his salary seem not so great anymore.

I wouldn't say great, really good but not someone to build around

Neal definitely needs a very good center to hit that 40 goal plateau. He works hard in other areas but his main asset is firing lasers. Doesn't create much on his own.

Vanek is the better player but not 2M per year more better.

I know. My overall point is that Vanek gets a lot of crap due to his giant salary, and some of that is justified, but he is a very good player.

had 84 points that season, only time he was a ppg player

and had 28 even strength goals that year vs the year he had 18 even strength goals and scored 40 in 73 games
