The Penguins have missed the playoffs 4 years since 1990. Plus, Pittsburgh is a small market. - cap1681
Yes...four years straight...tanking it...
Then there was this that probably helped a bit before that.
Mario Lemieux, one of the most highly touted NHL draft picks in history, was due to be drafted in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. Heading towards the end of the season ahead of the New Jersey Devils, who were placed last, the Penguins made a number of questionable moves that appeared to weaken the team in the short-term. The Penguins posted three six-game winless streaks in the last 21 games of the season and earned the right to draft Lemieux amidst protests from Devils management.
Calling Pittsburgh a "small market" is a bit of a joke anymore. Sorry...you have 2.5 million in the Metro area and are quite established by now.

Was it the helicopter crashing into the open roof, JCVDs fight with the mascot, or his stint as a goalie for part of the game??? - cap1681

The Islanders have a "generational level" player - cap1681
I'm assuming you meant to use a question mark.
Similar in comparison to Sid. Ovie was flat out better for the first 3-4 seasons, and at that time the best player in the league was Lidstrom. |

I'd consider Tavares a generational player, or maybe an elite player. |

I wouldn't. We're too used to hyperbole in our society. We have a storm of the century every year and everyone gets to have an arguable generational player. He's nowhere near as good as Stamkos and I have a feeling Seguin will be better than JT once he's as established as Tavares. |

The only reason I remember him is that he once got into a fight with Darby Hendrickson of the first-year Wild to settle the dispute over who was the most scrub-tacular. |

He's rounding into a point per game player playing on a crappy team. There have been only 50 point/game players in the history of the NHL |

Agreed. They've now got 4 FW (Staals, him, Skinner) set to make nearly 27M next year
Can you say goodbye Tuomo Ruutu?
Next year they have 17 players signed, with a little over 6M in cap space... |

$6M.
If I was Carolina, it'd be worth the extra 500k-1M to have a guy that skilled want to stick it to Washington every year. |

He's going to be a huge deal when that team gets to Brooklyn and they start spending like a team with "New York" in the name should. |
