he didn't say that specifically... not at all.
Pierre Lebrun said he has the inclination that Bergevin won't necessarily be looking for rentals.

- EricEngels

Very odd situation for him at the moment...He has to look long term for this team, but they are having success now. It's very tempting to try to go for it, but then again, he said that he wants to rebuild this team through the draft.

I really doubt he will make a big move.

it's not the case for any team to say that they can afford to overpay for anyone, deadline or not.

everyone has a worth--worth is different to different teams. It's foolish to look at the Canadiens and say they shouldn't make moves because this isn't "their year".

I'm not saying they're a favorite.

But is every team that's a possible contender stupid for making trades by the logic your advancing?

There can only be one favorite.

Montreal should look at moves that will help them now and in the long term. Ryane Clowe is a UFA-- doesn't mean the Habs shouldn't flip a 2nd rounder to get him just because he could leave. He helps them now, and could help them in the future, and it would hardly be overpaying.

As for the Canadiens, they even have some prospects they could part ways with. They aren't likely to trade them for rental players, but that depends on who the player is, what the future potential for keeping that player is, and what their evaluation is of the prospect they would possibly trade.

- EricEngels

if clowe is out there to be had, bergevin should go fuul throtle after him. he could be a real difference maker in a series with boston, toronto in particular. plus, i can't watch much more of desharnais and gallagher on the same line.

So...it's like if he had said :

"I have a gut feeling Bergevin could possibly be looking for a rental."

...or maybe not...

In what world would a trade for Ryan Clowe mean that Deharnais and Gallagher wouldn't play together anymore when they've been the most productive line on the team?!

Bergevin said it, if he moves, it won't be for a rental. So if he moves for a UFA, he will try to resign him.
- QuebecPride

if Bergevin has a chance to pick up Clowe for one of his 3 second rounders, i'm sure he does it, regardless of whether or not he intends to try for a re-sign.

Actually, the Plekanec-Gionta-Bourque/Ryder line has been the most productive

I would prefer to see him acquire a player like Dubinsky. 28, decent contract and plays with grit.
