it's not the case for any team to say that they can afford to overpay for anyone, deadline or not.

everyone has a worth--worth is different to different teams. It's foolish to look at the Canadiens and say they shouldn't make moves because this isn't "their year".

I'm not saying they're a favorite.

But is every team that's a possible contender stupid for making trades by the logic your advancing?

There can only be one favorite.

Montreal should look at moves that will help them now and in the long term. Ryane Clowe is a UFA-- doesn't mean the Habs shouldn't flip a 2nd rounder to get him just because he could leave. He helps them now, and could help them in the future, and it would hardly be overpaying.

As for the Canadiens, they even have some prospects they could part ways with. They aren't likely to trade them for rental players, but that depends on who the player is, what the future potential for keeping that player is, and what their evaluation is of the prospect they would possibly trade.

Bergevin said it, if he moves, it won't be for a rental. So if he moves for a UFA, he will try to resign him.

Hopefully Bergevin pulls something similar.
- God_then_kovy

For that kind of price yes.
But I'd prefer him to stand pat and wait for FA to get something. He's still evaluating his prospects and while MT did an outstanding job to this team, we're not yet contender.

IMO, he should use all his picks in the next draft no matter how (moving up, trading, drafting) instead of wasting some for depth or rental(Unless of course it's an offer he can't refuse).

We Habs fans should be happy about this season no matter how it will end.

Can somebody please explain to me why Eriksson would be available? Or Wheeler for that matter?

This would have been a solid move 2-3 three years ago. But the fact is that Murray, a slow-footed defensive defenseman is even slower now. He has some value on the PK, but is just getting destroyed by the opposition in 5-on-5 play.

I am happy that the Penguins made this move and hope they give him plenty of minutes.

Because the Habs want them, and Bettman wants to help the Habs.

he didn't say that specifically... not at all.
Pierre Lebrun said he has the inclination that Bergevin won't necessarily be looking for rentals.

So...it's like if he had said :

"I have a gut feeling Bergevin could possibly be looking for a rental."

...or maybe not...
