They need vet's not young D-men. - Chipd
They do? 4 of their top 6 have 6+ years of service in the league, they actually need more high end young talent on the backend.

Smid is decent. Jeff Schultz is excellent. The rest are awful.

Point is they have vets.
What they don't have is high end young talent on the back end. DK why they took Yak over Murray. They could've had Schultz and Murray. If they continue down their current path Jones is a stong possibility along with the possible signing of DeKesyer, their top four would be amazing. DK how they could re-sign all of these guys long term but they sure would be fun to watch.

Jeff Petry is not awful either. They have the worst bottom 6 in the NHL. They need to make a move so they can fill out their roster otherwise they will be a 2 line, 2 defenseman team for a long time

The point is - young or old - their defensive talent is lacking.

Vanek - one year left at 7.14m
Pominville - one year left at 5.3m
Leino - 4 years remaining at 4.5m
Stafford - 2 years remaining at 4.0m
Ott - one year left at 2.95
Myers at 5.5 and Ehrhoff at 4 for the rest of eternity
Hectht, Scott,Regehr,Leopold and Sulzer UFAs
Time to firesale for sure. Your players should have more value with them not being rentals as long as the GMs see them as such.
At least you have some solid young players and prospects with another one coming with this first rounder. Time to embrace those players

The door won't hit any of the UFA's on the way out hard enough except possibly Sulzer.
Ehrhoff is fine at $4M. Obviously Myers needs to step it up, but that it up to him and the new coach.
They need to resign Ott, badly.
Vanek and Pominville are producing.
Stafford and Leino will either be traded or bought out. They should be.
