It's easier to replenish offense via FA than it is defense. I'd rather Holmgren secure that young #1 D and then go trolling the UFA market to fill in the offensive gaps than the other way around.

There's no Giroux in free agency. Even if they add several UFAs, they won't replace Giroux, and it would probably be more costly than re-signing Giroux.

Look at the FA crop. The top centers are Mike Ribiero, Andy MacDonald, Tim Connolley and Derek Roy. Which of them replaces Giroux and accepts a deal that is under $3.75mm(which is what Giroux makes next year when the cap drops)

Yes Giroux will get a pay raise after next year, but the cap will also likely rise. You also ignore that getting that number one defenseman means he'll get a big cap hit that will hurt the effort to land offensive help

People on here seem to think trading Giroux is ridiculous but I don't think it's as outlandish as trading BOTH Carter and Richards within one week of each other. If the price is right going back our way, anyone is fair game. His trade value would be highest now while his cap hit is below $7M+ or whatever it will be.

We traded our top 2 centers and our offense never missed a beat. We lost Pronger and have never recovered from it.

What kind of return would you be looking for to trade Giroux?

When they traded their top 2 Centers, they got assets that turned into 4 players in the lineup. When Pronger got injured, they received nothing obviously. So comparing trades to losing a player to a career ending injury, isn't really a good comparison of situations, as far missing anything.

LOL, they are not a Cup contender WITH him. Utterly ridiculous statement.
- phillydentist

Obviously they aren't, but if you're trading a player touted as a top 5 in the league (perhaps potentially top 5 after this season thus far), you'd damn straight better be catapulting this team into cup contention. If not, sorry but you literally lost the trade and threw away our only elite player.

You dont need a #1 D man to win a cup... if it was that easy 15 teams would win the Cup each year.
- jak521

Certainly looks like you need a #1 Dman to win the Cup in this NHL.

The last 5 Cup winners and their #1 Dman:

Detroit Red Wings - Lidstrom
Pittsburgh Penguins - Letang
Chicago Blackhawks - Keith
Boston Bruins - Chara
Los Angeles Kings - Doughty

No it wasn't. Will they be a Cup contender if they trade Giroux for Pietrangelo?

That's a general answer. Looking for specifics.

If we are not even a playoff team with Giroux, how do you expect to be instant Cup contenders trading him?

It's utterly ridiculous to expect that. This isn't NHL 13. You have to give something to get something.

And I'd rather have a young franchise defenseman than a young franchise center.

No it's not. You make trades to make the team better. The point the poster made is that to trade Giroux, you need to be doing it to make the team significantly better. I agree on the value of a franchise defenseman.

Shattenkirk is a good player, but he is not a franchise defenseman. I would do it for Pietrangelo. Probably not for OEL at this point.

Agree on all counts therefore the '+/++' that should come back to even out the trade.

Shattenkirk isn't a franchise defenseman. Even with ++ it's likely that you're trading the best player in the deal by a good bit. There's no way I'd trade Giroux for a Shattenkirk led package because it's not going to accomplish the stated goal of getting a franchise defenseman

I'm actually OK with Pietrangelo and OEL. But Pietrangelo's new contract will make it hard to add offense immediately(he's going to get $7-8mm this summer). The problem in the case of OEL is, he's signed to a good, friendly contract. Phoenix will have to pay Giroux a huge salary in another year, and that's a concern for that franchise.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. I plan on writing my trade proposal plans when I get home.
