Under a new coach that will hopefully install a more defensively responsible system, and if consistently paired with Timonen or Grossmann, I think Coburn can be a solid player.
I would rather package Mezaros and Read for JayBo as long as Calgary will assume at least 30% of the cap hit. Since his deal is up in 2014, its not a far fetched request. Read will be a tough resign due to cap reasons in 2014, and at a reduced hit of roughly 4.7million, JayBo would be a great fit and solid upgrade.

Going into 13-14 with a D of JayBo, Timonen, Schenn, Coburn, Grossmann and either Gus or if we get really lucky Seth Jones, would be fine by me.

guys like matt read are worth what they get paid. if i move him, it's in a deal to get a more productive, younger dman...or at least someone who projects that way, like shattenkirk. plyrs like that aren't moved this time of yr and shats ( ) is virtually untouchable anyway. just my take.

Let Danny play centre! When will Lavy realize that he is better up the middle than on the wing. Perhaps him and Hartnell will redevelop that chemistry from a few a couple of years ago.

As for the point about playoffs...I can't help it. I want them to make it still.

A lot of people on this site over inflate the trade value of Matt Read. Read is a good, not great, forward. At 26, he is already into his peak years, and has no real upside. No team is going to give up a good YOUNG defenseman for Read, unless he is part of a much larger package. Finally JayBo is only 29, its not like you would be moving Read for a 35 year old.

I dont want to build a culture of tanking. If they can put on some kind of forest gump miracle then I am all in. I would still be giving the kids most of the minutes however (Schenn/Coots).

I've been pissing on the need to play Briere in the middle because he is worthless on the wing, has been his whole time here. If the organization doesnt plan on buying him out then they need to put him where he can contribute.

If they do end up getting close and missing there are still good playes up for grabs. At least one of Morrissey, Pulock, Ristolainen or Nurse should be available in the middle of the pack.

If we are gonna tank I'd rather it be for the right reasons i.e giving the youngsters more playing time and allowing them to grow into winners. Not so we can shoot bullets in the dark at the draft.

That's a very sexy scarface, there. I'd assume there's no way he lands here, considering his philosophy.

I agree, I would give major minutes to Schenn and Couturier as the 2nd and 3rd line centers and let them get the experience they need.

Re Briere: He is useless on the wing and would be inept as a 4th line center. I would give him 2 options:
A. Accept a trade and we will move you as soon as possible or
B. Enjoy the view from the press box and your buyout check will be cut at seasons end

I'd hate to get hostile with a player who has been a good soldier. Despite my lack of preference for him in particular, Briere is a good player and never been a problem child, so to speak. I'd rather they not give him an ultimatum in season but rather handle that in the offseason. They could start by making their case now and give him time to decide. I don't know I'd just rather treat players with the respect they've earned and he has earned a substantial amount imo.

edit: they could reduce his minutes and explain why while giving him those optiions. I don't see the need hammer him into the pressbox right now.

Read's a bit older, but he's a 20 goal scorer, can play all three forward positions and, based on numbers, is a near elite PK guy. They don't grow on trees.

Respect is well and good, I just don't see where he fits in the lineup right now. I'm not saying to make this public or to embarrass him in any way, and I would certainly allow him to give a list of 5 or 6 teams to be traded to. I would even take as little as a mid round pick for him so the deal can be done quickly and he can move on.

In the words of Michael Corleone "Its just business, it isn't personal". Going into this season, the Flyers had paid Briere 40 million dollars for 5 seasons work. I don't believe he has been mistreated nor do I feel the team owes him any extra special treatment.

No they don't, but they aren't going to get you a young defenseman with top pair potential either.

eh if it was just business Michael would have never killed carlo.

Getting where these guys are, it takes a certain amount of pride. When you poop on guy's pride who has been a perennial goal scorer and fan favorite for several seasons it sends a bad message. People were ranting and raving last year about how if the Flyers traded JVR it would hurt their chances to resign young talent. That may still be the case but taking a dump on a guy like Briere just because he doesn't fit, will do that amongst veteran fa's. IMo you need a little more than the guy just not playing well in a shortened season to do something so aggressive out in public view.

Ok, so you are suggesting that Briere center one of the top 3 lines and the Flyers shouldn't buy him out at seasons end?

No I'm just saying I wouldn't tell the guy you are gonna sit in the pressbox for the rest of the season. I'd buy him out at season's end and in the meantime offer him the chance to play somewhere else. I wouldn't try to strongarm a guy who has been a significant piece of my franchise for the past 5-6 years.

Edit: also I'd put him on notice that due to his performance his ice time will suffer too unless he can show us he deserves more. Not in those exact words but I wouldn't do it so that I'm basically scapegoating him for the whole team's ineptness.

I see both philly.com and Tim P on CSN are calling for Briere to beswitched back to Centre. I do believe the fact that Lavi has been stubbornly employing him on wing is one of his biggest failures this year. No issue with buying him out at season's end, but dear God.. Briere has never been good on the wing and loses a ton of battles on the wall. At centre, he can be very dynamic in the O zone.
