I think he had a contract in Europe that he had to play out. Someone can correct that if I'm wrong though.
- OilCountryEast

he didn't have to. He chose to honour his contract

Smid would be an upgrade this year for the Sens but next year on a healthy Ottawa blue line he probably play 5/6 minutes and the PK. Bishop and 1st is a very steep price to pay for that return. I could see a Smid trade with Ottawa as a rental but if the Oilers want a conditional 1st rd pick for him they should probably look at other trade partners.

Klefbom had a good camp and apparently the Oilers were considering asking him to come over this year.

I think skyrocketed might be a bit of an exaggeration, but given how he's played, I'm fairly certain he's worth more than Ottawa paid for him
- sensarmy_11

It may have been a steal when they acquired him too. I'd never heard of him before he got traded, but who knows what his value may have been.

It strikes me in terms of Bishop + conditional 1st for Smid, the conditional 1st is more of the sticking point than Bishop. I don't think Bishop for Smid is THAT unfair in terms of what rentals go for. I understand that adding a 1st if Smid were to re-sign could be untenable though.

It's not like Cowen would be playing ahead of Smid

Bishop was acquired for a mid 2nd round pick last year. A mid 2nd round pick is a pretty good deal for a rental dman (Johnny Oduya went for a 2nd and 3rd as a rental last year).

Stands to reason that either Bishop's value has sky-rocketed, or Smid for Bishop is fair value. I think it's probably the former.

- Morris

I personally have a hard time swallowing Smid is worth a decent up and coming goalie and a 1st round pick (if resigned). As I said, he is a guy we don't even really need.

He scares me too. Here's a guy that seems to hang around with the team more than other prospects in the past. I hope they don't fall in love with him like Prv and keep in the AHL when he should be in OKC.

If he was 100% , he would definitely be ahead of smid. Maybe smid is his partner, but not ahead of him

Realistically sens can get something much better that ufa smid for bishop .... Look at all the teams who would like a guy like him in their system :
Oilers
Flames
Islanders
Devils
Tampa
Philly

Yeah. As I say, I find it easier to believe he's worth Bishop as a rental than he is Bishop and a 1st while re-signed. Give or take.

I think the Oil have as much interest in Bishop as the Sens have in Smid, frankly. They'd like him, but they'd much prefer someone better than him.

Smid played like 22 minutes a night last year for the 2nd worst team in the league and was a +4. Cowen's great but he's not better than Smid quite yet

I though that Klefbom was injured before the World Junior Championships and that's why he did not play. Didn't think that he attended training camp this year because he was out with a shoulder injury ...

you mean keep in the NHL?

It'll be an interesting next couple of years. Assuming we draft a mid 1st prospect this year. Will we be able to develop prospects slowly and patiently, bringing them along until they're absolutely ready to make the NHL? Now that we've got better organizational depth, we're able to be a little more careful with our B-prospects and long-term projects.

Smid has been in the league 7 years. Cowen just had his rookie season last year and has been sidelined with an injury all this season. I'd hope Smid would be considered better at this point in time....especially with all these trade predictions.

Because Bishop, Bernier, Lehner and Khudobin, despite playing 126 NHL games combined, are better starting goalies now than Dubnyk will ever be.

Again, you do realize that legit #1 puck-moving defenseman (probably the #1 demand league-wide) is going to cost more than Hemsky. You'll have to say goodbye to one of Eberle, Hall, RNH, or Yakupov to start with. Then you start adding the other pieces (complimentary players, picks, prospects).

For now...no one. I wouldn't make a change to the Oilers goaltending situation (except drafting a goalie) until they could allow less than 30 shots a game. It's not their most pressing need, and to me goalies can be added as a pretty late piece of the puzzle.

He's benefiting from arguably the best team d in the league, IMO.
*edit* I guess Bernier could be considered bolded too.

You're right. Hemsky for Weber, Gagner for Datsyuk + Zetterberg. Might as well do Smid for Stamkos while we're at it.

Ya, I have a feeling they are going to give him every chance to prove himself. Which is okay, but we've seen time and time again how guys begin to fail after a good opening stretch. Then the worry is about his condifence.
