You're not looking through my eyes.

I'm looking through the NHL's eyes. They don't have one, so it doesn't exist.

Here's a question to anyone who says bad player performances (Coburn, Giroux, Hartnell, etc.) are just the result of a bad short season and not a long-term regression:

Does it mean that players like Voracek and Schenn aren't necessarily progressing, that they've just had a good short season? Or does it only go the 1 way? I've seen people on here praising how much Voracek and (until recently) Schenn were progressing, but any bad talk of Coburn is met with, "He's fine, he's just had a bad year."

- jmatchett

I've posited that Coburn hasn't been the same since taking the puck to the face in 2008, but that position requires a longer memory and has thus been mostly ignored.

Meh. I'll believe it when I see it. As Homer and Lava did not seem to be on the same page before the season started (talk of Lava needing to change his system and Lava denying that), this would mean that Lava is a part of management's push to get Briere to accept a trade. Not sure that's the case.

Why put him on the fourth line then?

The NHL also has the shootout to decide games so their judgement is suspect.

If a guy is signed next season and not creating a somewhat sticky roster situation, then no need to be actively trying to move him. Sure, I'd listen to offers for guys like Talbot and Coburn, but I'd need a significant return.

There's no reason not to get some return from the UFAs, though

- Jsaquella

ugh...they sigend Gervais to 2 years?! why woudl they do that...

then again, it's the same team who signed Shelley to a 3 year contract...

Winning the Cup any year is mutually exclusive from every other year played in the NHL. It's not the same with statistics like goals or points.

Take Roger Maris for example. He hit 61 home runs to break Ruth's record. He got an asterisk because he had more games to accomplish the feat. That makes sense but when you're talking about the Cup, the previous years have nothing to do with the current season.

48 games, 82 games, it doesn't matter. You are not competing with anything outside of the current season that would warrant an asterisk. It doesn't make it any easier or harder to win a Cup just because you played less games. They haven't always played 82 games btw.

What did they plan in the Original 6 era? 70 games?

In the cases of Coburn and Hartnell, neither played until the season started, so they didn't have the kind of process to getting up to speed that others did. Then Hartnell got hurt and set himself back further.

In Coburn's case there was no injury, but a lot more was expected from him. He was asked to be the anchor on a top 4 pair. He can't do that, but when paired with a good partner, he's shown he can be solid.

In the case of Giroux, He was hurt in Germany and possibly not 100% There's a logical reason for a lot of the guys who have struggled.

I'll agree with that to an extent, but even in the 09/10 playoffs he was phenomenal. But I guess that was just a really good streak as opposed to this year's really bad streak. I think that also having to wear a visor may have had an impact, as several NHL players in the past have had trouble adjusting to wearing one, and some have gone back to not wearing one in the end.

Unless you aren't aware of what an asterisk symbolizes, there is no debate.

I never said winning the cup wasn't winning the cup.

- wolfhounds

I don't think it's about what an asterisk that doesn't exist symbolizes. It's clearly only about what you think it symbolizes.

Lavi's going to put out the lineup he feels gives his team the best chance to win. Putting Briere "down under" fits that plan.

G'day.

No big deal, Gervais is a 6th/7th defenseman with a small hit who can be buried with no cap implications.

There's not a fanbase in the world that cares more about fringe guys that this one.

Furthermore, speaking of organizations giving up on players.....

Marty St. Louis was bought out of his contract in Calgary as a young player and made an UFA.

In other words, he was Calgary's property and they got ZERO in return.
