If a team is willing to trade a top defenseman to the Flyers. It's pretty easy to guess who is going to be on the list of players they'll ask for in return.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess you ain't talkin about Gervais, Wellwood or Knuble

Everyone seems to forget this. Flyers are at like 56 mill already for next year with 11 free agents.
- Jimmygrazz

How many of those 11 free agents do they actually have to replace?

Probs a package of Lilja, Foster, and Cote. Throw in an 8th round pick in 2112, to sweeten the deal.

There always has to be a sweetener! That's what convinces the other GM to agree.

yea he's one of those pieces that if you trade, will immediately cause a void that needs to be filled, despite an underachieving season.

According to capgeek, they have 9 forwards under contract, 8 defensemen, and 1 goalie. So they will need to sign at least 4 guys. I should have looked at it like that in the first place.

Some of that salary will be unloaded somehow or at least will need to be. The draft is going to be the best way to improve this team so that first pick will have to be a hit.

Theres pieces in UFA to fill the void IMO, that could be a better fit for our overrall D. And I wouldn't trade him unless a middle first rounder is coming back in this years draft. Somewhere b/w 15-22

Flyers cap # next year is at 56.5. That includes 10 forwards, 7 D and Bryz. It does not include Pronger. 2 of the D are Gervais and Bourdon. Assume Bourdon is on LTIR or waived or traded and your at roughly 55.9

If you plan on resigning Rinaldo and and adding Laughton to the mix, you are now at 12 forwards and a cap hit of about 57.8. Those forwards include Harry Z and McGinn. You will certainly need at least one other top 9 forward, assume its Gagne and you get him for 2 million, you are now at 59.8. Your back up goalie will bring you to around 60.8.

At this point you are already eating into Pronger's LTIR relief money. You will now need to leave a cushion for injuries/call-ups of at least a million, so you basicallly have about 2.5 million to add to your D.

Good luck getting a number one for 2.5 million!!

Much better to move any vets you can, shut down Timonen for the rest of the season and let his foot heel, and get a top 5 pick. Do whatever you need to do to move that pick up, so you can draft Seth Jones.

You now have a pretty sweet core of players all 25 or younger consisting of Jones, Giroux, both Schenns, Couturier, Voracek and Simmonds. With a group like that the Flyers should be serious contenders soon.

They would also be as easily talented to incur the wanton wrath of the Flyer faithful. A vicious cycle thou doth propose.

Bill, again I agree with you 100%. However, the scary thing is I felt like this was kinda of an "duh" concept. Not to say that it was a bad blog, quite the contrary, but that most of us understand this and realize what the team is this season, yet sometimes you wonder if the management does. I understand how lucky I am to be in a market that puts a ton of money into the team....that doesnt always mean you are doing the correct thing to win...

I'm sure there will be a long line of teams offering us their mid first round pick in the deepest draft in recent memory for Braydon Coburn. We're gonna have to set up some sort of numbering system like a deli counter just to keep track of them all.

Have faith in Homer.... He always seems to get the job done (most of the time - minus last summer) if the player is needed and available. He'll trade, waive, wheel and deal if need be. To get a #1 defenseman is got to be first on his list. Beside some core players, Homer will do the moves necessary to bring in a good player.

I think the whole "deep" draft is being overplayed. When these guys like media type say its a deep draft it means picks 1 through 10 are petty solid when in years after say 5 there was big drop off. There isnt going to be a kid drafted at 15 that turns into a superstar at least not immediately.

Depends on the definition of "get the job done". If last year was any indication, then we might be waiving bye to a core player (also depends on your definition of core player).

I'm almost thinking of Holmgren the same way I currently feel about Laviolette. Very good at his job, but ready for a change. The idea of home grown players excites me... more so than big trades (giving up Coots + for a #1 D). We know that with this coach we have an attack in your face style...but we need to be better on defense for that to work. We know with Homer that most of our talent will come from big trades, but we need patience to really grow our own talent.

I wouldn't be upset to see all of Briere, Hartnell, Coburn and Timonen get traded for top picks, and enjoy some player development for a change.

Most guys drafted after 5 will take a year or two to become good NHLers.

That's the norm. But there's still a deep pool of talent that should still be regular NHLers, that is what is meant by a deep draft. Deep draft doesn't mean it's chock full of ready made superstar level players.

Hell, it wouldn't hurt the prospective top pick to stay a year in junior.
