Every team is playing 48 games. No team has an advantage over another in this regard.

Going back to the Maris, Ruth reference, Maris had an advantage over Ruth, therefore they gave him an asterisk. Some people want to give Barry Bonds an asterisk on the home run record because he allegedly had an advantage over Aaron.

I liked him too. Love how people are crying cause he threw up a couple shutouts. If he keeps it up in about 5 years his career shutouts might actually equal bryzgalov's season high for shutouts.

At the beginning of last season, he was playing with (a one-year younger) Kimmo Timonen on a second pairing. The top pairing were Chris Pronger and Matt Carle. They had the most minutes and were also used as PP points. Pronger also played the most PK and PP minutes of any defenseman. Coburn was expected to play about 22 minutes per game and chip in some points while playing a shutdown role.

At the beginning of this season, he was still playing on a shutdown role (now with Niklas Grossmann). However, it was also expected (maybe unjustly) that he would be able to contribute more offensively and spend some time helping the PP unit. As a more senior-level member of the blueline (due to Pronger's absence), he was basically asked to continue a shutdown role, but to contribute in other areas.

His PK time has gone up, but after a handful of games, he was largely removed from the PP because he was ineffective. His +/- of -11 is third worst on the team (his defense partner is a -1). He has 1 goal and 4 assists through 30 games (1 pt every 6 games) whereas he had 24 points in 81 games last year (1 point in every 3 games). I believe he's also leading the league in minor penalties. I'm sure there's a good way to spin this though.

- jmatchett

Coburn's Average time per game on the PP is pretty much the same as last Season. No spin is neccessary. Only need to present the facts. Coburn has been used the same way this Season, as he has last Season. In the same role.
How he has performed this Season, is a different conversation then what role he is put in, or what responsibilities he's been given. Everyone is pretty aware of how he has played this Season.

I don't think it's the shutouts. I think it's the fact he's putting up a .930+ save % for a fraction of the cost that Bryzgalov is putting up a sub .900 save %. Chalk it up to the studs Bobrovsky has playing in front of him.

Or maybe it's the wonderful system their coach Todd Richards uses. Richards reminds me of a young Scotty Bowman.

honestly, no one thought he was a stiff, so why is it such a big deal that he's showing he's not a stiff? I was on record as being against the bryz signing but how often do you see me posting about that? I still think he can turn his tenure here around and make it a good move in the end

It's funny how when goalie play here as opposed to other teams their numbers magically change. Bob had poopty numbers here, Bryzgalov had better numbers before coming here. Hell I think even Biron has put up some nice numbers with the rangers.

The problem with Bryzgalov is he's not an elite goalie. That's not to say you need an elite goalie to hoist a cup case can be made when one looks at Fleury or Niemi. I don't think anyone wants to cling to the notion that either of those are elite do we?

If Bryz has a good team in front of him, he can LOOK elite but otherwise he can't elevate a team by himself either in a short stretch or a long stretch. Yea he can win a game here and there like we saw with New Jersey last week. But again I remember all the years if just wanting a goalie like Bryz that can at least keep you in the fight.

Short passes are exactly what you want. The reason Philly is failing is because there are all up at the opponents blue line waitng for a pass, long passes are easy to intercept. Carle was good as a Flyer, he has always struggled as a bolt, unsure why they brought him back
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

Most of the current Flyers D has no problem making short, puck moving plays from the defensive zone. I know what you're saying though...thye problem at times is the gap between the forwards and D is too large necessitating longer passes with a lower percentage of success. Having Carle back wouldn't magically close that gap. Flyer forwards (in particular) need to support the puck better, at both ends.

Why don't you realize that these facts are not true and your system of using untrue facts is in fact not a true system? The system uses facts to prove that I'm right and you are truthfully wrong. It's a fact and that's proven by a system that is a truth in fact.

There were plenty of people advocating that Bob be placed on waivers and hope he got claimed just so the Flyers could lose his cap hit. Others thought that getting a 3rd for Bob would be a reach. To me, that says people thought he was a stiff.

I'm guessing the thought process went like this.....

1.) Correlate two statistics that have no business being correlated.
2.) Add Derek Mathers and Jody Shelley into the lineup.
3.) Give Zac Rinaldo permanent first line minutes
4.) Profit

- johndewar

Almost as bad as that BSH guy last season who tried to claim Carle was as good as Suter. Let's see him run the same stats he came up with for the comparison this season now that Carle isn't insulated by a better supporting cast and Suter isn't tied to Weber.

I seriously doubt if Bobrovsky was here, things would be much different. It's not a nock against or for either guy.
