He also drafted Staal ahead of Toews. That was a bigger mistake than drafting Esposito. Since Shero has been GM in Pittsburgh 2006 was the only time he had a pick in the top 20.

He's also drafted Bennett, and Depres with late first round picks. Those guys are NHL contributors already.

- PLindbergh31

Bennett and Depres are far from impact players yet. I know Penguins have a lot of hyped prospects but I feel that organization is getting the Detroit Red Wings treatment: anybody they draft is going to be good because they drafted them. The Red Wings earned their reputation years ago but haven't drafted an impact player since 2004 yet they always have highly ranked prospects. Pittsburgh are the new darlings of the NHL and those around the league can't stop talking about how wonderful there GM, owner, fans, whatever is....... Yes I am a bit of a hater but am completely justified and until one of Shero's draft picks after the 2nd overall pans out to be more than a roster filler, will feel that I am correct.

Talk about some bad drafting. And I know you can do this with every team, take a look at the Rags.

Can you imagine in 2006, 2007, and 2010 if they would have drafted Giroux instead of Sanguinetti, Pacioretty instead of Cherapanov, and Fowler instead of McIlrath.

Wow....

Well they certainly won't be buyers. Not sure what parts they have to sell really. No one is going to want Briere.

I think drafting Staal over Toews was partially done because they knew they already had two stud center man up the middle in Crosby and Malkin so adding another potential #1 center would handcuff them in the future. Besides, Staal helped them win a Cup so that was a great choice, IMO.

I think they could have turned Toews into something better than Brandon Sutter. They would have won a Cup if they drafted Toews. Probably more than one. I don't see how drafting an inferior player is a great choice.

Claude Giroux, Matt Read, PK Subban.

So any contract that underpays the player and keeps the money in the owner's pocket.

They won a Cup so everything leading up to that is part of the reason. We can speculate that they would have won one or more with Toews but we know for a fact that they won one with Staal. Staal was also ranked ahead of Toews before the draft.

Also, the didn't just get Brandon Sutter. They also got a solid defensive prospect and a top 10 pick.

When Briere isn't scoring (13 game goal draught) he literally brings nothing else to the table, in fact he's a complete liability. Not to factor his cap hit which is bordering on criminal for what he is providing.

Agree to disagree. Toews is the far superior player to Staal, and they play the same position.

he was ranked as #40 under north american skaters....

Stolarz wasnt even ranked.....wasted 2nd round pick

- Philly1980

Although I do agree he was taken too high, I think the Flyers MAY be onto something with him... He left the NCAA to come play in the real professional pre-league, the CHL, and his numbers have been fantastic.

Lets hope he develops into a legit starter, of the Rinne variety... lol.

I agree that he's superior but it's hard to argue that Staal was a mistake when he was a key piece in the team's '09 Cup run. If you take him out of the equation, then everything changes. Butterfly Effect.

Mistake is the wrong adjective for sure, however, it's not even close when compare the two, Toews wins in every category except size.

I understand that. Are you implying that if the Penguins would have drafted Toews instead of Staal they wouldn't have won a Cup? Toews captained a team to a Cup and has a Conn Smythe under his belt. If he was with Malkin and Crosby it would be frightening how good they would be. Like scary good.

I'm not implying that at all. What I'm saying is that we know that they won a Cup with Staal but we are merely speculating that they'd win one with Toews. There chances would be greater but it's still speculation nonetheless.
