It would have to be Laughton and a 1st + most likely. IMO, Laughton isn't as good of a prospect as people seem to think.

read was a 26 year old rookie who outscored guys 5-6 years younger. Also he's probably not going to be a frugal investment next go around on the contract. Defensemen are a higher value than forwards. Read is a good guy that can play on any line but that's about it. FLyers need mobile defensemen, they have the knack for acquiring forwards.

I understand that. I just think that if they move a player like Read, I'd prefer they shoot for the moon in a bigger package for a bigger ticket defnseman. I don't know who, but it's what I'd prefer. I'm just not sold that J-Bo helps at all.

of course Jbo helps. He can eat minutes and the Flyers barely have two guys better than him on their blueline now. Kimo isn't getting better and once he's gone you have to find a number 1 and 2. If it's matt read straight up I pull that trigger 7 days a week.

Laughton should be a solid NHL but no one is looking to move a potential top 4 dman for a 3rd line center.

The Crosby to Getzlaf/Perry contracts aren't comparable. The Pens were able to longtail the deal to lessen the cap hit. Look at the salary breakdown over the next 8 seasons:

The cap hits are close, but not the dollars paid out. With the new CBA, stars will be getting higher cap hits than we've been used to with the previous CBA.

Doesn't Olli Määttä project as a top 4 dman down the road? Curious to why the Flyers would draft a projected third line center, especially in an area of tremendous need.

I think they're horrible contracts, but not because the cap hits are close to Crosby's.

I guess they figured Laughton was more of a sure thing as to reaching said potential.

Plus it's the Flyers.

Read, despite recent struggles, has been one of our best players the past 2 years. With the way this team is struggling to score, and with our current position in the standings, I see zero reason to trade him for the 2nd most overpaid defenseman in the league (Komisarek). Just my position.
- jmatchett

Agreed. Besides he has a manageable cap hit that will go up but not astronomically. We need players that don't carry $4M+ hits and can log some productive minutes.

i think if that little weasel Michael Pecca didn't go on that rant about Jbo on the NHL network or was it NBC sports, that half of you guys who are so against him wouldn't be.

The Flyers viewed him as another Adam Henrique. His numbers are actually better than Henriques were. Maata was viewed as a run of the mill defensive defensemen by some scouts (THN). Maybe that is how the Flyers viewed him and thought they could get a dmen of his quality later in the draft.

Still don't like it. The JvR deal was basically forced due to our blueline's depleted depth (regardless of Weber/Suter). I don't want another deal where we're dealing the player who led NHL rookies in goals last year, is able to play on any 4 lines as well as PK and PP duties, for a player who has been an underachiever for the past 4 years. I know that true #1 defensemen don't grow on trees, but I really don't think that moving Read for J-Bo is getting us any closer to a Cup. Keep Read, resign him when he hits FA, draft smartly to organizational needs, injure James Neal, win Cup.

Well Shero drafted Määttä, everything he touches turns to dust, so no worries.

No way are the Flyers using their 1st round pick on a guy with a funny name with lots of umlauts.

If Laughton turns out to be Henrique, then it works out great.

Eh, to me that's the human equivalent of rearranging the chairs in the locker room. It feels good for a minute but accomplishes nothing.

Hire the guy or don't make a change.

I guess Homer naming himself coach makes sense them. Lame duck doesn't apply to someone who can jettison you to Adirondack, buy you out, etc.

I would love that but Henrique showed a lot more offensive ability throughout Juniors than Laughton has.

His numbers were about the same but I think Henrique was also considered to have more offensive upside.
