Thanks John.

Agree 1000% on HOSS -- was watching the game with my daughter last night and before getting hurt, just marveling at Hossa's level of play and smarts. Truly, the guy is amazing and might have been one of the best things to happen to this club.

He is really a leader and an amazing example for ALL the guys, especially the young guys. Train, prepare and then go out and get the job done in all 3 zones. He is truly a treat to watch. Yes, I wish he would score more but most of the time I don't care because he is such a complete player.

Honestly, I think Saad -- oops -- I mean Jesus has really learned a lot from big Hoss. If he can just soak it all up and learn, that will be invaluable. Kind of what happened with Leddy last year and especially this year. I was watching Leddy and Rozsival on the bench last night talking after their shift. I swear he has learned more from Rozy this year . . . again, great veterans with lots of knowledge to impart to these young guys with talent . . . they just need a great model and Hoss has been and continues to be and now Rozy for the D.

Not so sure. Depends what Chevy wants to do in the offseason. Tweak what he has or semi-blow up and rebuild. There are conflicting reports.
- John Jaeckel

I was thinking more that Stan wouldn't want to give Sharp to a division rival. If Chevy was willing to give up Evander then we have a deal, but that's not likely.

Regarding Columbus, I can see Sharp accepting a trade there.

Today's article, thoughts on the game-Perry's new deal and the future of Kane Toews and Hossa's buyout down the road....

Al makes a good point about the mechanics of the cap and a possibly Hossa buyout going forward.

Per the discussion a week or so back though, have to think the hawks are thinknig about WHEN Hossa leaves (voluntarily) or via buyout, vis a vis the future, kane/Toews etc.

Point being, there are ways they can get out of the Hossa deal that don't require them to do it before 2015. Or maybe 2015 is really the target date: retirement, or buyout or something.

I think somewhere in there, 2015/2016 is when Big Hoss hangs em up–after goal 500 in a Hawk sweater. Big Party, maybe another Cup or two.

the guy is one of the best playoff shutdown centers in hockey-----we will have to beat this years version of aThornton or a Sedin...........Bolland has proven he can handle all of them in series after series..........there is a brilliance and artistry there that very few possess. And do not minimize who Kanes turnovers are minimized by his center........get used to the fact that he's not a great offensive player but value the very special skills he has.........and are really tough to replace
- nellie

couldn't agree more....

I think somebody posted earlier about trading Bolland to Vancouver? Not sure if that was a serious statement or a sarcastic one...but I am sure that Vancouver would love to add Dave Bolland to their team! I remember two years ago when the Hawks were down 3-0 to Vancouver and took it to 7 games after... #36 returned from injury in game 4! the guy is a SHUT DOWN center! come playoff time, it is all about match ups. We all know how much Q loves to shuffle his lines around...you know who will be matched up against the top lines of other teams when the games mean the most!

Bolland isn't an offensive machine, but his point total shouldn't reflect all of the intangibles brings to the Hawks team. And the last time I checked, it doesn't seem that #88 is having a hard time finding the net, or the open man somewhere on the ice....guy is having a MONSTER season!

24-2-3. How much can we really complain about right now about this team?! Have a nice day everybody. GO HAWKS!

What are the options?
1. buyout in the next season plus; summer '13 or '14.
2. trade in the next couple seasons.
3. retire well before age 42.

The buyout would cost 1/4th to 1/3rd it would if he retired in a few years; cap hit wise. Trading him seems far fetched as does a buyout right now, unless he's really hurt again.

Way too early to tell but like I mentioned in previous blogs, the FO will be thinking long and hard about this the next 15 months. Life of the 'Hawks w/o Hoss seems tough enough. Possibly - while unlikely - happening in the future is really tough.

With his speed he won't have to retire until he decides too since I think if he is healthy he can play till contract ends at a high level

Thanks John,

I won't look forward to the day if Hossa is bought out, he is treat to watch every game. Unfortunately the numbers may say it has to happen that's the downside.

The upside would be keeping two of the best young players in the game as Blackhawks throughout their careers.

I have watched a lot of hockey and there aren't many two way players that can be mentioned in the same breath as Hossa.

Al, I love reading your articles.

Something to keep in mind, If Hossa retires after the 2015 season, the Hawks will be on the hook for an additional $2,625,000 per year cap hit - through the 2020/2021 season - because of the new "Cap Advantage" rules.

Talking about trading roster players while this team is rolling is silly. This Hawks as they are right now can win the cup this year. Moving Bolland, Sharp or even Frolik (who I don't like) isn't going to help you win now.

Add a depth player or two at the deadline and hope everyone can stay healthy.

Deal with the lower salary cap and all the players that you guys love to trade, after the season. Quit trying to mess with it now. The Hawks are the most complete team in the league and they've played that way for more than half the year. Roll with it.

While they have played very well, the Hawks have not played exactly half of the league so planning parade is kinda premature. Improving the team has to be considered.

I cringe every time I see Evander Kane trade proposals. The guy is not very well liked (unless things have changed from last year) by some important team mates in the dressing room. Apply that to him walking out on bills in Winnipeg restaurants you don't have a very strong character guy.

A strong character guy, a leader is what you would be removing from the Hawks dressing room in Sharp.

Sure E. Kane's talent is drool-worthy and hey, maybe the kid grows up but until I hear otherwise I will pass all day on him.

Whilst praising Saad, I also want to point out that my faith in B52 appears to be getting rewarded. Yet another solid game last night. That line was all over Colorado in their end and came close a lot.

Someone, somewhere along the line has gotten into his head that he can be more than John Scott as a hockey player.

- John Jaeckel

JJ,
I agree with you about Bollig. When they first brought him into the mix, I'll be honest, I didn't really care for him. He struck me as a wanna-be tough guy--trying to fight every game, etc. But this year I've really grown to like him. I have a lot of respect for anyone that wants to prove they can be more than a one dimensional player.

What I am seeing from the Hawks is chemistry amongst the guys who have played together for 4-5 years in Chicago

They instinctively know where to go and how to quickly find the open man
Seabs goal a prime example

This is what you get from guys who have played together for 5 years and its's not something you will see from Saad or new faces
It just takes time

A lot of unselfish role players on the 3 rd and 4 th lines who are not worried about their own stats .....just willing to do whatever it takes to win
It's a great recipe for winning
