The way to defend it... it's 8 years. Parise, Suter, mabe even kovalchuk.. those are going to look crazy one day - AlfieisKing
And this is demonstrating that the NHL's idea of a max contract length is going to bite them in the ass. Now the money is the only negotiating point. Not only that, they have to re-negotiate in 7 or 8 years instead of 10-15 (crazy stupid for a team to do this, but they had that option). Ultimately, the average salaries can only go up faster now than under the last CBA. The union won here, and I'm convinced it was a red herring.
They should have left the max contract length alone, and just focused on the front-loading aspect.
Perry's a great player. Don't know if he's worth this or not, but if they can keep the fire in his belly, we know how good he can be. |

I take it now that Perry/Getzlaf are signed we can go back to the normal "Ducks are shopping Bobby Ryan" rumors. |

I dont think that keeping Ryan should be the question here - moreso, why are they keeping four defensemen at $3-4M .....
Koivu is expendable, or will come cheaper than his current contract - less than $2M.
I wouldn't consider Selanne expendable, but it may take a bit more than $2M to retain him.
Again, its Souray at $3.6M, Beauchemin at $3.5M, Allen at $3.5M and Fowler at $4.0M. that is two too many at that salary.
They need to trade two of them to contenders for prospect defensemen in return. - GadesnSens

I just don't understand why that's always the go-to assumption. He's not going anywhere, especially when the Ducks are almost a lock to win the division and they're gonna be going for the Cup. |

I doubt that either will want out, even if the team struggles, California is (frank)ing awesome and they're getting paid a load of money. Anaheim isn't nearly as bad as CBJ was with Nash in the Howson era. I do agree that neither player is worth that money and depth is going to be a serious problem, especially next year with 25% of the cap tied up in two players. - Nucker101
I like the fact that you said, "They arent nearly as bad as CBJ!" are you blind? The Ducks are way better than CBJ will ever be. Regardless of "cap constraints" that everyone is talking about, they still have 11 mil in cap room, probably more like 5. Lydman counts $3.5 and is a goner. And dont forget that you have Hiller that could be moved and that would free up $4.5. |

LOL at the kings fan calling RG and CP "scrubs." Bitter, much?
The Ducks now have two "bad" contracts, which really aren't that bad because they are their two best players and those huge salaries were absolutely necessary to get them signed. If they had traded them (in the middle of a playoff race, no less) they wouldn't have gotten anything close to their value. Just look at the Nash trade.
If the Ducks have two bad contracts, the Kings have 4. Doughty gets paid $8M a year? Your second best goalie still has 9 years left on his deal?
And just wait to see what Kopitar's next deal will look like. $10+ easy. - gtrman09

Everyone saying the Ducks are going to get Kings ransom for Ryan. I dont see how. Unless you are talking multiple first round picks.
They are going to have to take quantity over quality. They cannot take any big contract back. |

There is no doubt that Hiller will remain on the roster this season. The offseason will be when any potential salary is cut from the Ducks roster.
I still don't know why the Ducks were so eager to get rid of Visnovsky. - Gunner Staal
When you want to get bigger and stronger infront of the net, Lubo is definatly not your guy. Plus you sign 2 dmen with Lubos cap hit. Two birds with one stone, and you get a 2nd rounder for a 35+ year old! I think Souray has played really well, and Beauch has taken lubos role (powerplay wise) and had played GREAT! Guy should get a look for the Norris if his play stays on this pace. |

It was a risk to count on a guy like Souray but that is why it is called a risk, sometimes it works out. |

Yes, but that works for us as far as filling out the roster. I don't think the ducks need to be paying Allen/Souray that sort of money.
Fowler sure, but not the rest.
Not to mention the Sens will spend to the cap in years when they have a cup shot, Ducks ownership is known to have an internal cap less than the NHL's mandate. |

I agree that's why I think it's funny people are always putting out trade rumors involving him. Just because other teams want him doesn't mean the Ducks are shopping him. And if they wanted to trade him they would have done it last year when they were at the bottom of the standings. Trading him this year when they are contenders and he's locked up at a reasonable price for three more years would just be stupid.
Already seeing the rumors on TSN and Twitter though... |

Maybe they think if they throw enough rumors out there, it will get under Bobby's skin (like it did last year) enough that he'll request a trade again and then their team can get him on the cheap. |

I don't understand why we went 3 months w/o hockey. These contracts are horrible. - gobluenotes
At least one guy gets it!!!!!!! The owners cried poor, the cap is going down but lets continue to sign contracts that will hamstring clubs in the future.please explain why we got ripped off for half a season of hockey.im not saying getz and perry didnt deserve good contracts but both of those are high and when 2 guys account for 25% of your cap space what are the owners thinking.so who is gonna pay for this????? We the fans are, higher ticket prices, merchandise etc etc. |

Obviously the lockout was pointless, I'd never be a lockout apologist, but these $66M and $69M contracts are quite a bit less than the $98M contracts the Wild signed. And these are kinda considered to be MAX deals now, so maybe the lockout did get the owners a little bit of what they wanted/needed. |

When Bobbys contract expires the ducks, as of now, will only have 3 guys under contract Getz/Perry/Fowler, yes that is about $20 mil but they seemingly could have enough cap space available to resign Bobby. It will likely mean that they will have to really depend on the farm but they have a really really good farm system. I imagine that next year Vatanen will take Lydmins spot and down the road Lindholm and perhaps Mat Clark will get shots. With the forwards I imagine Palmieri Bonino Maroon Etem Holland will get bigger roles, plus the guys like DSP Friberg Rakell will all get good looks in the NHL. If we trade Hiller we have probably the best goalie in JRs in Gibson who will be ready to step in. |

I see that Koivu has an $800,000 bonus on his contract. Is this for winning the cup? I only ask because those bonuses screwed the Hawks after they won the cup. |

secondly, the article was asking how the Ducks could manage their cap problem ....Ottawa is not in cap trouble |
