For all the "this contract will have a ripple effect on everyone else" talk, its never really impacted the Penguins trying to resign Crosby or Malkin. Perry's deal has no bearing on Malkins.

What are you talking about? First off, there second contracts immediately made them two of the top paid players in the league. I'm not saying it wasn't deserved, but it (while part of the new NHL form) was pretty new for guys to shoot from entry level deals to the top right away. Crosby was in the league first, his deal came up first, they decided to structure a deal that had a bit of length, but not some DiPietro deal, and settled on his number for his cap hit. Malkin came in following him, decided to follow suit on his second contract.
Mind you even doing so he was still one of the highest paid players in the league period, regardless of his age.
Crosby's third contract came at a time when he was coming off of a very serious injury and when front loading contracts and extending them out could be done.
You act like Pittsburgh is oblivious and some outlier to the rest of the entire business and world. It's not. Without looking it up, if memory serves correctly guys like Ovechkin signed AFTER Crosby's second contract. And at that time he was neck and neck with him and signed for more years (I believe 13 versus 5) so it was not illogical for him to make more considering he was giving up UFA years. As it stands, I'm fairly certain Crosby is top 3 or at worst top 5 right now in full value for his third contract (I believe only Weber and Ovechkin's are higher), and I'm fairly certain factoring in his second and third contract together he's arguably the highest paid player (granted it's tough to make a complete comparison since Ovechkin's contract length doesn't match up completely nor does Weber's).
If anything Crosby, Ovechkin, Edmonton with the Vanek offer sheet, Holland with the Red Wings signings etc sent ripples through back after the 2005 lockout and everyone followed suit. If you really don't think this is the start of ripple effects of similar deals/structures for top guys you are delusional.
Even a Pens fan in here already stated that Shero acknowledged if they re-sign Malkin his cap hit will definitely be higher than Crosby. You can't just look at those old deals anymore. They all had tacked on years that the Wings made popular. The players didn't care, why would they? Add 3-5 years of low salaries when you are going to be mid-30's or even older and sign for $100 million, or sign for 6-7 years and for only 60 million? Let me tell you, it's highly unlikely many of them (if any) were going to make up that additional 40 million from the ages of 34-40. Not to mention NHL contracts are guaranteed, so you do not have to worry about injury once you sign.
These deals will have a ripple effect. They always do. No team or player are exempt when things like this happen in it's industry. It's in the NHL, it's not comparing NFL contracts to NHL contracts.
