I like Jake Allen but I'm not convinced he will be the long term solution. Holtby was awesome during the playoffs and has struggled this year in his first full time season.

Halak still has really good numbers this year.

- stveshdy

He does, but don't be amazed if Allen is their starter next year, or if they decline to extend Halak with Allen on hand.

poop, I got crossed up...root for regulation.

NP.. the worst problem we have of late is that all the teams we are chasing are playing one another. If the games become 3 pointers.. we are proper (frank)ed.

They won't, but Giroux will likely have a cap hit that starts with the number 8

It projects to be like 2003... a lot of potential star players in the top-60 picks. They could miss the boat on the top-4 and still end up with a hell of a player.

Unlike 2007, this is a great year to suck.

- Tomahawk

Good to hear. If they miss the playoffs, which I'm fairly certain they will, a top 5 pick would go a long way to softening the blow.

This week is going to be huge. If the Flyers can win tonight, they will start next week with games in hand on most of the teams around them in the standings. If they're not too far back, they can mount a run.

Tampa could drop them in the standings tonight. Games against everyone has been tough lately. Buffalo stinks and we didn't exactly roll them. We've already dropped a game to Florida.

As crazy as it sounds, they have lost two home games to Florida, which borders the insane.

maybe get 2 young guys to compete like WSH has done it. maybe that way the plyr emerges as the starter, instead of being anointed. best scenario could be stolarz vs somebody else in 2014.

Notice how Florida played them, too. Stole a page out of the Devils handbook.

Florida doesn't have the talent to steal the page out of anyone's handbook. They are as rotten a team as I have seen in a while.

I hope that they take their time with Stolarz. I don't want to see him for another couple years, at least. Getting the chance to play with London is the best thing that's happened to him, let him stay there another year, then bring him along to the Titans...then the Phantoms.

Top 5 pick, some sound moves in the trade and free agent market and they can be a 100+ point team next year.

The biggest reason I'd wait is you'd have to trade assets to land another goalie. A good veteran is going to be expensive in assets and have a big cap hit. A good youngster is going to cost you other assets. If I'm trying to "rebuild" or "retool" Why move assets to address a spot that is filled now?

Especially when you have a better UFA class in one year?

- Jsaquella

You don't know that the 2014 UFA class will even make it to June.

You're taking a serious cap hit for another year with a team that you don't think can go to the finals. (perhaps)

Also, if it becomes possible to make moves that improve your team defensively you could need the cap space.

Of course I could argue your side as well. I think there are good reasons to just go ahead and get it done this summer, there is also just as many reasons to give him another year. I waffle over the subject to be honest. The more frustrating the season gets the more I want to see him gone. I was just on here last week saying I don't think they'll buy anyone out so that's how bad I'm swinging on the subject.

They beat the Flyers twice by playing how the Devils play-eliminate the fast passes out of their zone with a good forecheck and jump on the attack as soon as you get a turnover.

If I was playing the Flyers, I'd do exactly what the Devils and Rangers have done. Because the Flyers haven't shown they have a counter for it. They did beat the Devils and Rangers this season, but in both games they won they got excellent goaltending from Bryzgalov.

Which is why we spanked them, 7-0, the first time. Then, their coach made adjustments and clogged up the Flyers a la the Devils and Rangers. Same plot, same theme, same ending.

Who should be bought out so we can suck more and then the bandwagon will be empty except for 1) the fans that stick through thick and thin and 2) the complainiacs.

Well when they signed Bryzgalov that was the general idea to get tremendous goaltending from him. Point taken though, Flyers don't seem to have answers for teams that play that style. Florida shouldn't be able to implement that style and beat the Flyers. The second home loss was the second night of a back to back after the big win in Pittsburgh. They also found out Read was supposed to be out 6 weeks that day. I can give them somewhat of a pass for that loss.

You don't know who will make it to UFA in 2013, for that matter. It's possible that Jimmy Howard & Mike Smith are available.

The kicker for me is, if you want to improve the defense, you need to move assets to do so. If you buy out Bryzgalov, you have to likely move assets to replace him, as well. At some point you're going to be out of assets.

I wouldn't be amazed either way. Personally, Id wait until 2014, with a new coach and a new scheme. If Bryzgalov can get back to his Phoenix ways behind a team that plays a better two way game, then there's little reason to buy him out at all. If not, then at least the buyout payoff lasts less time.

Doesn't seem like Dineen makes any adjustments against any other team in the conference.
