Quantify that. Better how, exactly?

And does better this year mean better for the next 6 years?

JVR is good, but so is L Schenn.

- wolfhounds

Is just that JVR is being clutch in TO. He's been a big part of their success this year, even if it's marginal.

Forget. I don't expect you to understand what I'm saying. You have to watch Despres play to see for yourself.
- Orpik44

No doubt. He was scratched at least once when the Pens played the Flyers, so I haven't seen much of him yet.

Agreed. And hopefully he continues to do so.

It just annoys me when it's a foregone conclusion that Toronto got the better of the deal from half of one season when Schenn is doing well, and ultimately playing the harder - reactionary - position.

Either way, I'm good with the deal. I think Schenn will be an absolute rock in a couple years.

Granted, with all the players the Flyers have dealt away the last several seasons - Williams, Sharp, Richards, Carter, JVR, Bobrovsky - you'd have the makings of a really solid team, but there's no point going down that road.

Crazy huh? We don't understand the scratch at all. This team has something like a 17-4 record when Despres is on the ice.

Despres is a top pairing player, excellent skater and awareness. Schenn is like a 4-5th d-man right now. He can hit a lot but can look foolish in some plays.

If Holmgreen is patient, you guys are going to be good. You can't trade your young core. Too many good youngsters on that team + Hartnell.

Be patient with Simmonds and Couturier...

Agreed.

Regarding Schenn, I guess I'm just optimistic when considering his age that he hasn't hit the limits of his potential just yet.

Still, this year, you guys are putting it together and looking real dangerous.

I would say a 4th if the Flyers are willing to take on some of the cap hit over the duration of the deal but I don't see a way the Pens actually want him back..... The entire reason he signed in Philly was due to the fact the Penguins refused to go as high as they did in salary. It would be idiotic to now trade a pick for a guy who is going to negatively affect your cap situation in the slightest when you need to resign Letang and Malkin and Sutter down the road.
- Yonk1216

Is this guy, and a couple of other posters serious? First off, I wouldn't trade Talbot back to Pittsburgh for the record. I would never help that team for a stinking mid round pick. Talbot scored 19 goals last year. Thats nothing to sneeze at, while also killing penalties, and playing overall sound defensive hockey. And you're saying thats not worth 1.75 million. Or that the Flyers hypothetically would need to pick up some of that whopping 1.75 million cap hit. lol, ok dude. Role players who can score, play D, and can move up and down the lineup are certainly worth under 2 million. That contract is an absolute steal. I undertand his numbers aren't eye popping this year, but the whole team is struggling.

Nobody in Philly has so much as mentioned Depres or any of the other said players.
- dudebrah87

I just like to make crap up. This was 1 page but I wasn't going through the entire blog.

I'd at least ask for one of their defensive prospects.
- KGBflyers10

You give me a 3rd & Määttä I'll help back Max's bags.
- ob18

I'd change it if was a 3rd or 4th plus one of Joe Morrow,
Scott Harrington, or Olli Määttä I don't think they will part will
Derrick Pouliot or maybe even some of who I listed.

-OB18

Well, yeah. If they were willing to send Despres over, I'd consider a straight up deal. I almost always prefer a warm body over non first rounders.
- Jsaquella

All I'm saying is Talbot is a 3rd or 4th liner with a big salary. A pick is what he lands. I understand the inner division thing but really you think those prospects would be involved? I hope Talbot stays a Flyer. I thought when thy signed him at that price it was time to cut ties with him.

Yea OK you wouldn't trade any of them for Max Talbot? Right

Talbot had a nice season last year but he's but he's back to being what he is. A grinder. I've seen Talbot play for years I know exactly what he brings.

I like the guy but see the phrase in bold up there? This is the rule. Last year was an exception. Trust me, he's worth $1M at max in a Penguins squad. Maybe he's more valuable to a young team like the Flyers. And I'm not one to low ball Mad Max. Great locker room guy.

4th round pick....and to those who say it would never happen...I say Rick Tocchet, Kjell Samuellson and Kenny Wregget

im thinking of last years playoffs ... first round exit... crosby acting like a spoiled 6 year old

im thinking of how incredibly awesome Flower has been in recent post season performances

enjoy the win streak, your chances of a cup this year are slim to none.

anywho... so where are all the TK rumors? isnt he the most likely to be traded category ?

I don't understand why Despres' name keeps coming up. Flyers aren't interested and never will be. I could see him going somewhere like Carolina where they could use a boost on D, but Despres is not what Flyers are looking for. Also, he's unproven.

People are very quick to judge the JVR/Schenn trade.

The reason Holmgren let him go in the first place is because he's soft. Yes, he looks great for Toronto right now, but as someone else said, he's in TO for the next 6 years now. You'll have plenty of time to see everything we did in Philadelphia with JVR. Dude never deserved to be 2nd overall pick.

Schenn is on a bad defense as a top pairing d-man (tells you how bad flyers defense is) so I don't really see how anyone could judge the trade at all. It was a D for a F. Of course the forward is going to score, it's his job. Where else would they have put JVR other than top line? Half the team is garbage.

I think it was a very fair trade and all the TO homers may be having a good laugh now, but just like every other year they'll be crying when they get sent home early. All it will take is one bad play for JVR to fall out of favor in TO.

You are telling me Despres wouldn't be a starter in Philly?..and even worse, that you don't need help on D? Come on, you gotta be realistic

He's one of the reasons your defense is bad. He's a 4th-5th d-man at best.
