Hes a winger who they sometimes try and covert.Hes not the problem with this team.
- buffalo 1

We also have an AHL defenseman that they converted to GM. That's not working out either

That would be a phenomenal deal

I don't think you could get Voracek for him anymore haha, but a young top-6 forward + a 1st + another lesser asset... You'd have to pull the trigger on that.

EDIT: Although, Vanek's cap hit is higher, and with the salary cap coming down so might his value...

I just think it's the way the team is going right now. If we were somewhere in a playoff spot right people would be less irritated by it. I just don't think it's worth getting upset over. There are so many other problems with this team that need to be addressed before him. This teams performance has pushed me back into watching soccer again .
- Sabresfan-365

So Vanek wasn't a problem today? He can light the NHL on fire for the first ten games and then putter for the next 20 and were ok with that? He can't be the best player on your team.

The thing is, there isn't too many of those younger top 6 fwds that we'd be able to get...

I dont get worked up on the captain issue like most. These guys are all suposed to be pros.I think Pomminville has been pretty consistant thru his career and lived up to his contract.Rather he wears the C or not or gets in people faces means nothing to me.Hes a good 2 way winger and worth his current contract.

Yes, considering who those guys are, I have to agree with you... These guys don't even have a Cup finals run under their belts, unlike the Flames guys you refer to. Blowing it up at or prior to the draft would probably be a good idea...

It's a pity, because I thought getting Ehrhoff, Regehr, and Leino (to a lesser extent) would transform this team back into a contender, I don't know whether it's the coaching, the environment, or what but all of these guys have disappointed me.

- Mr_Clean

Vanek, Pommer & Miller are all great players,
But the way this team is constructed its just unrealistic to think we can bring in enough help, quickly enough and under the cap, to justify signing these guys to big $$$ extensions

Smart thing to do is trade these guys in the offseason when we can get top value in the form of young NHLers
We have a pretty nice group of young talent to add to

Do it right, and we become a playoff team again in 2 years, "contender" in 4...
And since we'd have a group of guys all entering their prime at roughly the same time, we should be able to be legit contenders for a good 5-7 years

That's how I'd do it anyways

Based on what his 2 goals in 64 games?! his -30 rating? His lacklustre performance in the WJHC?

no i agree. vanek commands alot in return and a rebuild would take a few seasons. trading vanek could get us help in the rebuild and make sure that he does not go to waste when he leaves buffalo after next season.

All those players are on the downside of their careers. For Miller he will be 33 or 34 heading into his next contract. Vanek will turn 31 during the first year of his next contract.

In Vanek's case, he has been severely overpaid for the majority of his previous contract. He is too inconsistent. He hasnt scored 40 goals in 5 years. He had 1 decent season 2 years ago with 32 goals and 72 points for a $7M/year player. I dont see him getting a contract that will pay him a cap hit of more than what he makes now. I see him getting a 7 year deal from another team that will pay him good money for the first 3-4 years, but tail off in the final 3-4 years to bring the cap hit down when hes nearing the end of his 30's.

Same thing with Miller. Will get paid in the first 2-3 years of the contract, but decreases so as to keep the cap hit lower on an aging goaltender.

I'm not saying he's a bust. Even before he was drafted nobody had him pegged as a star in this league. Scouts figured him to be a good scoring winger but he was always a high risk player is that who you want to build around?

So, Miller makes that save, and youre not impressed? He "should have made that anyway". Bullpoop. RJ wouldve gone nuts had Miller stopped that.

It was a blast of a shot, that was accurately put in the smallest of windows. We're talking inches. Miller did everything he couldve done, that any other goalie in the league wouldve done to make his body big to make that save.
