I have a problem with this Brennan trade for one reason. This is another example of Darcy holding onto a player and making them virtually worthless. They invested a 2nd round pick in this guy, developed him and kept him on the roster only to get a 5th round pick for him. Brennan had value immediately after the lockout ended, he was 2nd to Justin Shultz in D scoring in the AHL. So what does Darcy do? Keeps him up, allows him to be a healthy scratch for most of the year and showcases him on the worst defensive and PP team in the league, a perfect way to deflate any value an offensive defenseman might have. It reminds me of the Derek Roy situation, 3 years ago Roy was a number 1 center on a playoff team. 2 years later the best we can get for a former 80 pt center is a 3rd line agititator. Darcy has no ability to foresee what his team should or will look like down the road, which IMO makes him unable to properly rebuild this team. He keeps trying to make the Derek Roy's or Drew Staffords work here in Buffalo, shows no ability to forsee a players ceiling or basement. Darcy needs to go. It's always too late when he decides he should or needs to move someone

no. you think they coulda traded him out of the ahl for higher than a 5th?

if they waived him he would have been claimed, so they got a 5th when it could have easily be nothing.

I also never said he had 2nd round value. My point is that it speaks to the arrogance of Regeir, like he knew something about Brennan no one else did. You can't tell me he wasn't worth more before the season started when he was lighting the lamp consisitently in the AHL.

He wasn't good enough to crack the top 6 on this team, which says a lot. He would have gotten picked up on waivers for nothing if we didn't keep him on the roster. They got a 5th round pick for an AHL-calibur player. I see your point of view regarding Darcy when it comes to other players, but Brennan will never be a consistent NHL player and I am glad we at least got a pick and opened up a roster spot in the process.

He keeps doing this with players, hence the Roy comparison. For how many years did we the fans and media know trading Roy would help the team, or that he just plain didn't care that much about hockey? But Darcy waits until he has a career worst in production to trade him. He had the same arrogance about Lindy, acted like he knew something about coaching no one else in the NHL knew while there were coaching changes every year on under achieving teams. He keeps setting this team back

It sounds crazy but he might be the only untouchable on this team. I would really want the younger players on this team taking after his work ethic and tenacity as oppose to a Stafford or even Pominville.

I'm not angry that he was traded, I wanted to see him play, when I did I wasn't overly impressed. But Darcy hurt his value by keeping him. Could you imagine what we could have got for Stafford and Brennan before the season started? Probably more than what we will end up getting for them

So we traded an AHL player and got a 5th? Ok.

When are the other AHL players going to be traded or waived?

Gerbe.
Weber.
Hecht.
Stafford.

- PassionBucket16

Thank god you aren't a gm. Gerbe is worth is weight in gold and weber has been our steadiest d man and will drop the gloves. Hecht is making just over a million to be a responsible 2 way forward...and guess what. He has been. +5 on a team full of minuses.

Amazing analysis.

They got to the MAC Championship game in 2005 and blew a 19 point lead and lost in overtime (I was at that game, freshman year of college).

They also lost in the MAC Championship game in 2009.

They had the #2 overall seed last year and a double bye, but lost to Ohio, who made a deep run in the NCAA tournament last year. The legend that was Clark Kellogg's kid grew.

All we got for our top pick in '07, which we got from Philly for Marty Barron, is NJ's 5th rounder via Fla? That's all he could get? The pick will amount to something between the 145 -155 player taken in the draft. Darcy is a worse negotiator than Obama. I have a suggestion for Rip van Regier, draft every incoming freshman recruited by BC for 2013. They are going to be loaded. At least 5 of BC's recruits are on the NHL draft list. Jerry York (the winningest college coach of all time) knows talent when he sees it, unlike the Ripper, who will probably be fast asleep by the 5th round after eating his fourth canoli. Add this screw up to the Grigo F-up on top of all the other screw ups and the evidence for firing the Snoozer is higher than the Skyway.
- Scoop77

I hate to have to defend Regier......BUT he negotiated a 1st for Goose. Come on people just because he was a 2nd rounder doesn't mean you'll get that. What did you expect for a dman who hasn't proven anything in his NHL games outside of being suspect in his own zone. Having a cannon shot doesn't exactly make you an NHL caliber dman.

His point was that whatever value he did have
Clearly decrease due to the situation here
I totally agree
Not only did we basically waste Brennan by not giving him a legit shot, we've also kept McNabb buried bc we have about 14 bottom pair defensemen under one way contracts
It's just ridiculous
I usually defend Darcy bc of what a good job he's done in the draft lately,
But this crap is brutal

Neither Brennan or Grigorenko were given much of a shot...
But guys like Pardy (never gonna be better than a #6), Hecht & Porter get minutes?
And why is Scott even here...
Judging by how Ennis & Gerbe get continually boarded, his 5min of icetime clearly intimidates no one... He's useless!

So your opposed to thinking Brennan could have gotten a better return when he was having an All -Star year in the AHL, your inclined to rather believe Darcy has somehow increased his value by playing him and has finally found a buyer after trying to trade him for 2 years?

Keeping grigs was clearly a poor decision

But the use of Brennan? He has never shown he belonged. And with the crap season I am not against leaving Mcnabb in Rochester to mature

This......never even a hint of showing his AHL prowess will translate to the NHL. He reminds me of Gage, Pittis, and to a degree Mancari. Great AHLers but fringe NHLer.

I bet Coho wouln't have 10 points givin the same ice time and line mates as grigorenko. Not a knock on Cody, I like him fine, but what did they expect Grigorenko to do?
- JPlatt915

I saw this and i know its old but I laughed out loud! Grigs was not ready for the NHL. Coho would have still done decent with that ice time... Why? Because Cody is NHL ready and plays hard in ever aspect of the game "defense improving big time". Grigs was weak as hell on the puck and needs to improve big time in that area. Also he looked lost every single time when in the d zone.

I'm not saying grigs is bad or a lost cause. He just wasn't ready for the NHL.

He definitely had more value then a 5th rounder! Maybe not a 2nd but maybe a 3/4th line prospect forward. A 5th is pretty much like releasing him.

Who signed Stafford to that ridiculous 4 year $16 million contract?

Darcy, that's who.

Do the Sabres not have a team psychologist who can interview these babies and see that they really would rather play Air Guitar, grab other dudes' nutsacks, sniff coke off of hookers' boobs, or generally care about anything other than playing professional hockey?

Remember a few years ago when Vanek was the whipping boy, and all we heard about was how he couldn't handle his huge pay increase? Nobody looked into his character before we drafted him? Or checked his ability to be a leader? Christ, every time he flubs an easy goal he looks like he got turned down for a date to the prom! Sulking baby! Remember his reaction to not being named captain last year? What a female dog.

Whose decision was it to make Pominville the captain? Remember the year or so after he signed the big deal, he was the whipping boy? No one bothered to see if what we actually needed was the "leads by example, silent" leader dude? The same guy who wouldn't body check a 90 year old? Who can't even hit the net from the blue line? This is our leader?

I guess Pommer was a better choice than Vanek the sulker! Or Livin La Vida Loca Derek Roy! Or "I'm only here to collect a cheque and piss on girls" Connolly. Or Guitar Hero Nancy Boy Stafford! Or so bad he's good Hecht. This was the CORE! PANSIES!

I mean, does any one else notice the problem here? Out of all these bums, pansies, and half-wits, name one guy that you would want to lead you into battle. Just one? Ott, but he wasn't here yet, and its too little too late. I can imagine him texting his buddies back in Dallas and telling them to come on over to sunny, beautiful downtown Buffalo and collect a pay cheque. You don't even have to work hard for it! Everyday is a toga party! No accountability. The boss will even let you drive his Ferrari and smoke his cigars while you steal his money blind!

Brennan's trade shows just how crazy this whole team has become. Sure, waiving him would have got us nothing, but where is the foresight that this would be a problem? Darcy? Hello? And Gringo? The word laughingstock comes to mind! Leino was hurt way back at the start of the season, and so was Gerbe, his future line mates. Ipso facto, he should have cooled his heals in Quebec until the other guys were ready. Again, Darcy's ineptitude.

And the saddest thing is that they have no one to lead in the future, and we still care.
