I think "gamble" is an over exaggeration.

And if the forward lazily floats back to cover, that's Laviolette's fault?

If it happens once, no.

If it's chronic, then it is.

If I'm Homer I'd try do this for next years roster. Trade Coburn and a 1st for Kieth Yandle(Thats the rumoured price). Buy out or trade Briere and use the free money to sign Perry and sign a top 6 defencemen and back up goalie. So in the end your left with:

Perry-Giroux-Vorachek
Hartnell-Schenn-Simmonds
Gagne-Couturier-Read
Rinaldo-Talbot-Fedotenko

Yandle-Schenn
Timonen-Grossman
Meszaros-[Ian White?]

Bryz
[Chris Mason?]

This roster i think is possible but unlikely plus I'm not taking into account that cap hits may increase. Well this is what I would do in a perfect world.

At this point, you're not going to get Yandle for Coburn and a 1st.

To change style of play is the real answer.

They have shown they are too stupid, not talented enough on the back end, can't pay attention to detail, and inconsistent to play any kind of pressuring aggressive scheme.

They should change styles, because this group cant play that way. Not really a compliment...

- flyer_nutter

Not really a knock, either. There's not many teams in the NHL that can play this system and be successful over the long haul. In fact, I don't think there's another team that has the same level of aggressiveness that Laviolette preaches.

Basically Lavy is trying to drive the Flyers like they are a race car, when instead its a pickup truck. He doesn't have the type of defensemen to play his system, and for whatever reason, he refuses to adapt.

The other maddening thing to me is watching the forwards try and skate the puck into the offensive zone or force a bad pass which usually leads to a turnover and often an odd man rush against. Whatever happened to dumping the puck and going after it when there is no good play to be made?

Finally watching the Flyers play in their own end is just painful. I can't even begin to count the amount of times I've seen every defender looking at the puck carrier rather than playing their position and watching their man. Watch most of the goal replays that don't come off odd man rushes and you will see it time and time again.

These are the reasons why I would like to see a coaching change.

Whatever the reasons are. There's two options. Don't change and go down with the ship. Or change and see what happens.

It's not easy over the long haul definately. You need players to match the style, and that is probably a little harder than with other simpler systems.

I have a weird feeling about tonight. Very bland.

In the grand scheme of things the outcome tonight isn't that important...

You've been telling me that you know Laviolette's system. I'm explaining that if you hesitate on the forecheck or on the pinch, you'll be late getting there. That's why I'm telling you that it's not a read and react. Unless the opposition clearly has posession of the puck and is skating it out. Then obviously the defense is to retreat. But when ever the puck is along the wall, and up for grabs, he wants his defenseman up on the play.

The real answer with this team, is to change styles of play.

- MJL

Not trying to start up anything, but I noticed you are harping a lot on Lavy's "system" this season, yet in the past, you said systems don't matter, etc. Why the change?

Also, what was so different under Lavy's system last year that resulted in a 103 pt reg season campaign, keeping in mind game changer Pronger played less than a 1/6th of the season. I think we both know that it's not like Carle was the lynchpin player that made Lavy's system work (hardly)..and the team played very well down the stretch after Grossman arrived, and didn't let up that many goals against (including a 3-0 shutout of the NJD a 3-2 win over Detroit, 4-1 over Montreal). So why is Lavy's system all of the sudden so bad/inappropriate for the team as constructed now versus last season (even post-Grossman)?

I think Bill recently drew a comparison to Dallas and their defensive woes, the difference being Lehtonen is/was still performing at a high level.

I heard he and his wife came to Canada and claimed refugee status because they thought their lives were in danger. Their proof was several other celebrities had recently died. I think we sent them back. Shame.. If Quaid had remained in charachter as Eddie, he'd have fit right in up here in Kanida!

Well the rumour I heard specified Pheonix wanting a young NHL defenceman and a 1st for Yandle. I threw Coburn because he's our best shot because I really doubt Gustafsson is going to turn out to be any better than he is now. Coburn is also only 28, which i still consider young. Problem is Giroux is going to need a raise and so will all the other young Flyers
