You would think not, with Tampa having lost Lacavalier and playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. However, the Flyers look to me like a team that will play well at times, but they just seem to find a way to lose. I really hope I'm wrong, but.....

In the past ten years, four teams have won as many as 10 playoff series.

One of them is the Flyers. The only team with more playoff series wins than the Flyers is the Red Wings.

So, yeah, it kinda is working.

- Jsaquella

flyers are also second all-time in winning percentage behind the canadiens since expansion. sadly we only have 2 cups to show for it. that they have lost in 6 straight finals borders on ludicrous. when you consider their opponents and the context, you can see how it's possible - montreal, nyi, edmonton, edmonton, detroit, and chicago. they never got the chance against a low-seeded, average team that found their way to the end like the canucks in 94 or oilers in 2006.

Let me elaborate:

The Flyers like Canadian players.

Canadian minor hockey has a different philosophy on forwards than the rest of the world: in Canada, your best forwards play centre. Period.

Think of the greatest centres of the past 25 years: Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, etc. All Canadians.

Think of the greatest wingers of the last 25 years: off the top of my head, it's hard to think of Canadians. Kariya?

2nd case in point: think of every time Canada assembles a national team. They always take centres and put them on the wings.

Flyers like Canadians. Flyers like drafting forwards. So Flyers draft Canadian centres.

- Atomic Wedgie

I think, more accurately put, the Flyers love them some CHL players.

They made the same usual mistakes. But they still came out up on their skates, and with jump.
- MJL

how do you explain the first 5 minutes of the game and trailing 1-0? They were flat, and unprepared, and found themselves behind very quickly. There was no jump at the start. it was embarrassing for such an important game to start that way.

You would think not. Regarding Gustafsson and Couturier, I don't think it's a bad thing for young players to experience growing pains. It's how they mature as players. Situations will very rarely be ideal to transition a young kid into a lineup.

I just think it makes sense to have Gustafsson play NHL games now. The season is likely a washout so mistakes he makes won't be crippling as far as costing the team valuable points. Don't the Flyers want to see what they have in this kid? Playing journeymen type players like Gervais on bad teams really doesn't serve much purpose.

Exactly. What they did to Bob will never make any sense to me.
- wolfhounds

it makes sense given their history of dealing with players, not just goalies. they rushed him, he was mishandled badly in the playoffs, and the owner dictated they land an established, seasoned #1 - hence bryz, hence bye bye bob. they didn't show patience. par for the course.

They have had several bad matchups and injury issues during season where they reached the Final. But, they've been consistently competitive, and it hasn't always been due to money.

I think they have been a little too reactive in the last 10-15 years. Still a ton of success, but under a cap that isn't likely to work. Even now, in this down season, they're still armed with a talented team, full of young players.

They've made errors, but still have a lot of good pieces.

You don't put a kid that's supposed to have a future with the big club in a place where he can get used to a culture of losing and make the same mistakes without correction. You put him in the A where the coach there will instruct him to play better. The A is a development league. The NHL is not.

That's fine. If that's the case Couturier should be in the AHL now, because his head has been up his ass all year.

i don't think their success in the 70s, 80s and even 90s had much to do with money. very different landscape back then.

they seem to have a mentality where a group is together for about 4 years before it looks almost unrecognizable to it's origin. whether they're reacting to a season past, the issues of the moment or both there's been little in the way of long-term strategy and continuity. it's not easy, it's a complex environment within which the must operate, and the desire is there - i never question that. i agree there a lots of good pieces in place. i don't want to see foolish moves made at this juncture.

It's true, majority of their picks in recent memory are all CHL products.

In general I agree with you, however Gus really isn't a kid anymore. He will turn 25 next season and I believe he is in his 3rd or 4th year of pro hockey. Also if they want to resign him, he will not be waiver exempt next season, so the time is now to see if he can play consistently at the NHL level.

I was actually just thinking this. I just got a Nexus 7, it's pretty slick. I didn't know there was an iPhone HB app, anybody here used it?

That's my hope, too. No foolish moves. I want to see a direction laid out. I want to see them do a better job of drafting and developing at every position. But I still adhere to taking the best player available. They just have to be aware of keeping balance.

The development will be helped by not saying can this kid play in the NHL right now, but rather is this kid going to be hurt by playing in the NHL right now?

Yeah, I used to be an iPhone guy, but switched to the HTC One X+, and obviously it's an Android OS. When I had my iPhone, I used the HB app all the time. It wasn't the greatest, but it had all EK's blogs, the respective blogger's blogs, and all their twitter feeds connected. You could access each type of content by simply selecting that tab at the bottom of the app and it would bring you to that content's page. It was handy and convenient.

No, the Flyers pulled their usual rush a kid routine on him.

He showed talent, so immediately he was named the starter, played well, hit a few roadblocks along the way and had a bad period in the playoffs. So the coach demoted him to third string behind a career backup and a guy who spent most of the year in the AHL.

The early exit from that playoff resulted in the owner declaring that they would "solve" the goalie issue. So they threw a pooppot full of money at Bryz. Bob couldn't play regularly, because Bryz needed to play and Bob couldn't be sent to the AHL due to playing 59 games in his first year. One fewer game, and Bob was waivers exempt ad could have started in the AHL.

So the Flyers decided to move Bob, rather than have him jump to the KHL and force a trade, because he probably wouldn't have re-signed as a RFA to caddy for Bryzgalov.

Bobrovsky is a glorious example of organizational failure, from top to bottom.

- Jsaquella

I brought this up the other day when the Bob remorse was hitting the fan. Bottom line is

Blame Boosh for sucking and having to get pulled
