Found a solid explanation of how the playoffs work:

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will still consist of 16 teams, eight in each conference, but it will be division-based and a wild-card system has been added.

The top three teams in each division will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season points and regardless of division. It will be possible, then, for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three.

The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.

Div 1
Boston: 120P (these wont be accurate so just go with me)
Montreal: 110P
Detroit: 105P
Toronto: 97P

Div 2
NYR: 122P
Pittsburgh: 112P
Philly: 103P
NJD: 99P

Playoffs would be:
NYR vs. Toronto
Boston vs. NJD
Montreal vs. Detroit
Pittsburgh vs. Philly
so no matter what, 2 will ALWAYS face 3 in their division in the playoffs as long as this plan is the same.
Now say TO Doesnt make it, and Carolina does (they're in Div 2), with 98 points:
NYR vs. Canes
Boston vs. NJD

they have to build this thing piece by piece. no use splurging in the FA mkt in the NFL unless you're close or signing a QB, which is pretty rare. they mostly plucked guys from winning orgs and sent the quitter dogs packing. that's a start.

I really dont see a reason to trade coburn..He had a solid season last year, not so much this year.. He is young and can skate and is a valid 3/4.

They should be more focused on finding a 1/2 dman then trading away 3/4.

Not sure, I do know that I'd actively shop Danny Briere, Simon Gagne and Rusty Fedotenko and listen to offers for Scott Hartnell, Max Talbot, Bryadon Coburn and Andrej Meszaros.

Not that I'd trade the latter four, but I'd be interested to see what I could get in return

Coburn is a 28 year old top 4 defenseman who is locked up for a few years at a solid cap figure. I would think Ottawa, Detroit, St. Louis, Columbus if they remain in the hunt could be potential suitors.

Coburn should be able to net a 1st round and a young player (not a hot prospect) but decent contributor. I just don't know if moving him would be a good thing for this defense corps. Who's replacing him?

I think Coburn's game suffered after he was hit in the eye in the 2008 playoffs. He seemed to become less aggressive, to me, both in terms of carrying the puck with confidence up ice, being physical (though Grossmann's partnership seemed to bring a bit of that back), and being an offensive threat.
