Blues aren't interested in trading Berglund. If they did, it would need to be an overpayment, and even then picks/prospects aren't what would be appealing to them, unless you were talking like JBo + 2013 first.

Just an idea.....what about JBO and KIPPER to St.Lou???

I think the offer I made was an overpayment. Your offer is just putting Berglund too high. I love him, but JBo AND a 1st is ridiculous.

Dude, this trade makes you guys the favourite for the cup. At some point you need to make the hard decision and go for it. This is mutally beneficial. In the long run CGY wins this trade, but how do you argue with making a trade that helps win you the cup? Also, you guys have the room to resign Iggy.
CGY traded away Brett Hull and won the cup. Hull had a tremendous career but I would do the trade again knowing that it brought us our only cup. And please, don't argue that we "could" have won more with Hull. It can't be proven and likely we would have had to trade Hull because we wouldn't be able to afford him as the hard times were about to hit the Canadian teams.

This makes us a team with 4 top 9 right wingers and only one top 9 center. In the system the Blues play, we can't just throw a winger to center and expect them to play well when playoffs start. Blues would be better off trading a winger for JBo straight up.

We want St Louis to the Cup, then Vancouver would be the oldest expansion team not to win a Cup and we could pile on even more!

I agree it's ridiculous, but I think it would take a ridiculous offer to get Berglund from St. Louis. Your offer only included one thing that matters to the Blues right now, JBo. A pick next year and a second tiered prospect don't do anything for a team trying to be a contender right now and over the next couple years.

Blues can't afford to add JBo and Kipper's salary to next years payroll, given the raises players they already have are in line for.

Hey no worries, I appreciate the odd comment here and there. And I hear ya...it gets tough to comment/post blogs for me during the day too what with work and all getting in the way. Thankfully I write most of the blogs the night before.

JBo, Stajan (don't laugh, he is playing quite well this yr), a 2013 3rd and a 2014 2nd for Cole and Berglund and Mcdonald (salary dump).

Counter it if it doesn't work.

Honestly, despite the rumors, I don't see the Flames and Penguins as complimentary trading partners. The Penguins needs are (i) 3-rd liner that can help the PK, (ii) a rental defensive Dman, and (iii) a long-term (ie, at least 2-3yrs) W.

To be honest, Iginlia is a great player, but the Pens just don't need any more scoring. And with Letang and Malkin needing to be extended in the summer of 2014, Giordanio's $4.02M fo 3 more years doesn't fit into their salary cap structure.

The players on the Flames the Pens would probably want are Glencross & maybe Sarich. Better to build deals with them coming back to the Pens than Iginlia or Giordanio.

We don't need wingers. As for your line up, like half your team is listed as C on the hockey news. Guys Oshie play wing but wsn't he a C. Backes, Steen Sobotka, MacDonald..... isn't Schwartz a C? Do you need LW. What will it take to get Berglund? Iginla aside, what trade could we make in the off-season to get him?

Good post. Iginla would be a nice add with a likely low re-sign amount.
Sarich would be a nice physical #5 which can be tacked on the deal.
And Comeau would be the 3rd/4th who actually excels on the PK.

In return, Despres, Kennedy, and a 1st.

Not trying to be a jerk, but given the Flames place in the standings the last couple years & age of their top guys, it seems like they need just about everything, especially when you are talking about young players for the long term, not just right now.

Sobotka is a 4th line player, when the team is healthy, regardless of what position he plays. McDonald hasn't played center since he was with Anaheim, and never under Hitchcock's system. Oshie hasn't played center since college. Schwartz hasn't played center since college, neither can be thrown there easily. Steen is much better as a winger, but he is already our 3rd center behind Backes & Berglund and just gets favorable matchups.

To answer the question what it would take to get Berglund... it would be along the lines of the trade for Johnson. We got Shattenkirk to replace Johnson though theoretically a downgrade, and got what we wanted in Stewart. We would need a solid center to replace Berglund, and something we were actually after like JBo. Obviously a 2nd line center plus JBo would mean Berglund plus someone like Cole or Russel. But I don't see a fit on the Flames roster for a center coming over. There is a small chance over the offseason, Blues might think they could move Oshie back to center and be willing to trade Berglund... but I just don't see any way it happens this season.

Hey, you know whats funny?

In the late 80's teams were trying to get the Stanley Cup out of Alberta, now days they're trying to get the #1 pick out of Alberta.

Glencross + a pick to Tampa for Purcell

Meh, I could picture the Blues throwing a draft pick Calgary's way, if Flames would take Elliott with it for Kipper. But given how he has played this year, unless he suddenly got hot, I picture other teams being willing to give up a lot more for Kipper than the Blues are, purely because we already have a goalie playing poorly that if/when he finds his game again he could carry us in the playoffs. I'd rather get Colbourne out of Toronto. And it'd be cheaper.

Philly has a bad farm, they are not going to be as willing to give up Couter as some teams may for a similar player.

Understand where you are coming from, but the Pens aren't going to be interested in a [Despres, Kennedy, 1st] <--> [Iginlia, Sarich, Comeau] deal.

Most of the Pens price being paid (ie, Despres and the 1st) would be for Iginlia, who will be a UFA in a few months anyway. If he wants to come to Pitt then, great, as he'd fit in well with the Pens, but he isn't a need for the Pens at the moment; he'd be a luxery. Despres and 1st for a luxery isn't going to happen.

Comeau and Sarich, maybe. Kennedy could be part of the deal, but the Pens would also have to send a Dman on the roster back who is not named Letang, Martin, Orpik, or Despres. Would be hard to balance the value in my eyes given those constraits.

Kennedy for Comeau might be a more realistic trade when all is said and done.
