Everyone from Mr. Snider and Peter Luukko on down should face the heat here.
- Flyskippy

Disagree completely. Don't see at all why this is Holmgren's issue (assuming you meant he should also be feeling the heat). Snider...maybe some blame but it's his team. I think he was more responsible for the Byrz deal than Holmgren.

Last season Holmgren was a genius by almost all accounts for getting such a return for Carter & Richards and revamping the roster in one offseason. He follows that up by going after every good FA on the market, but comes up empty. His fault? Don't really see how - his offeres were better than the ones accepted by those free agents. That doesn't make him a bad GM. Seems to me he did everything he could have done to make the team better.

You want to hang him for the Gervais signing? Foster? OK fine. He could have signed some other scrub, journeymen d-men instead. But there was nobody else out there substantially better than the guys he brought in.

Should he have kept Jagr? In hindsight, maybe. But at the time almost everyone agreed Jagr wanted too much money and nobody wanted to guarantee him a spot on the top line.

Should have hung onto JVR? Again, maybe, but look at how our defense looks tonight without Schenn. You ready for this every night? And it's not like JVR would improve our team D (nor would he be scoring this way on this team).

Sure, there are maybe a few things he wishes he could do over again. But that doesn't make him a bad GM, or the reason this team is playing the way it is. Most of that blame falls squarely on Lavy's shoulders in my opinion.

I watched the first 2 periods in fast forward stopped after 2nd period, did Rinaldo come back after the knee on knee hit?
- LJF

played a couple of shifts after that ... but not much in the 3rd.

don't get me wrong, i hate what i'm seeing, and my very inner core is seething with anger. i've just found a way to stifle it and not let it really, really bother me. it's just come with age.

What is that real core to you?

The people I would really be looking at keeping would be Grossman, Rinaldo, Giroux, Simmonds, Hartnell, 1 of Coots or Schenn and Read. The rest I could care less if they ever return.

- flyer_nutter

Im not sure how you dont have Voracek in there.

7th overall pick..
Their most dynamic player this season.
Size, skill and can skate..

I look to keep him over Couturier , Hartnell or Read.

Sharp had obvious potential based on his play with the Phantoms and was making very little money. There was no reason to dump him except to appease an angry coach whose shelf life was already running out.

Terrible trade.

- Feanor

Ellison had been a very effective player with the Blackhawks affiliate and shown flashes during his call ups.

The only issue I had with the trade at the time was that I liked Sharp's feisty nature. But Ellison looked to be a similar player.

I merely meant that everyone should feel the heat. I don't think Homer's job should be in jeopardy, I just think he needs to turn this team into something that has an identity with success coming within 2 or 3 years.

We agree here skip.

That identity you speak of, has been changing, lacking and lead to panic along with a lack of structure.

That has come from the top of the organization and trickled down imo.

The Flyers, with a coaching change, are about to change their apparent "identity" yet again.

LA does not win the Cup without "one dimensional D men" such as Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene. A big physical punishing shut down defenseman is a critical element to a top team. That is what Luke Schenn has the potential to become.
- MJL

Matt Greene and Willie Mitchell also aren't guys you break the bank for. Both, as veteran Dmen with many years of experience, make less than Luke Schenn is making on his rookie contract. Willie as a UFA shopping his services could only get 3.5 mill a year. He'd be the 5th highest paid dman on the flyers. Greene would be the 6th highest paid defenseman on the flyers

They are role players, important but complimentary pieces. Pieces you spend a few mill for in FA but you make them the cornerstone of your defense. The 2nd highest paid defenseman on the Kings wouldn't even be in the top for for Philly who has the top paid defense in the league (i think).
