yes, you're right, the man set this franchise back a long, long ways. so far that they're in first place in the conference less than a year after his firing.

i think we're all happy to have MB in his stead, but Gauthier is responsible for the following:

keeping Price over Halak
acquiring Eller
drafting Gallagher
re-signing Markov when everyone thought they should let him walk
swapping Bourque for Cammalleri (him and Therrien? never would have worked)
signing Diaz from the scrap heap
signing a capable backup who is 4-2 with a shutout
got Emelin over from Russia

i don't think his tenure was the disaster (personnel-wise) everyone makes it out to be. he made some awful moves but like it or not, his fingerprints are on this team.

- DoubleDown

I think he can thank his scouts for those two.

Signing Budaj is hardly noteworthy.

The way the Cammalleri trade was handled was shameful.

He had to keep Price and getting Eller was part of the same decision.

I'll give him Markov and Emelin.

I'm still not over the fact he traded for Kaberle.

that's not fair.

you can't say "the buck stops with Gainey for Gomez becasue he was the GM" when Gauthier was the pro scout and not give Gauthier the same treatment.

I always liked the "sell high" mentality of trading Halak, but pretty much every other move he made stank at first sniff.

you can attribute ANY personnel decision to scouting if you want then. but at the end of the day, the GM is the one signing off and he's responsible for the players on the ice.

disagree totally on Price. he did not have to keep him and even if he did, he still deserves credit for acquiring Eller, who is turning into a very versatile and useful player.

i wasn't defending Gauthier's behaviour at all. the trade was shameful. he was an embarrassment to the franchise the way he conducted his business. my point was only that his personnel moves weren't as bad as everyone likes to assume they were.

Calm down.

Price had proven nothing at the time, but it already seemed Halak was not able to play more than 50 games a year. It took balls for making that move.

And I still think Eller was badly managed because Halak was traded for him. Should have stayed a year in Hamilton.
