Gretzky brought new ideas to the game and revolutionized it. He'd still be the only guy operating out of his "kitchen" and people still wouldn't be able to stop him. You'd have to figure with today's training he'd be stronger and faster.

Goalies are much better these days. Think of Reimer, no such allstar in the 80'...

But the gap would be narrowed...

Anyway, what Gretzky did was amazing...and quite frankly I know it's a tough argument to make, but I just think that Crosby's game would work in any era...as to Gretzky, no way he survives the 50's, 60's or 70's...thrives in the 80's and early 90's....still one of the bests in the late 90's...but I don't see him being as dominant as he was in the 2000's and beyond...

he's probably the smartest player to have ever played the game to do what he did with his small frame and while far from being the best skater.

you can argue that his style fit his era or that he adapted to that playing style.

I think he would have dominated in any era but if Crosby isn't just as good he's not very far.

I'm good.

Still wondering why Emelin isn't on the first PP pairing.

Because pulling "the Forsberg" at the blue line is not very effective.

The guy did score nearly 3000 pts in his career. He certainly would have eclipsed that if not for Suter. Those kind of numbers transcend any issues that arise in any other era.

I don't know about Gretzky scoring 1.9 pt/gm in today's NHL...checkers are much better hockey players today than in the 80's...I think playing in today's NHL Gretzky's comparable would be Patrick Kane (with an edge to Gretzky being better)...
- number_23

biggest difference is equipment like sticks and especially goalie equipment and goalies on average are so much better.

I would almost put Crosby on the same level as Gallagher... ( I'm kidding...no way he's even close...)
- number_23

saw him play at 16 and he was the best player on the ice other than Corey Crawford who robbed him a few times.

Just an FYI, Gretzky finished 4th in league scoring at the age of 37. Patrick Roy won his first cup 12 years earlier.
