Should of the Flyers fired Lavi before trading Richards and Carter?

It wouldn't be surprising if they did. That said, given Briere's playoff performances in the past, it's hard to say there's no market for him.

Plus, other teams have compliance buyouts they can use if the cap hit is an issue long term, and the actual cash owed to Briere after this season is $5mm over 2 years-or less than his cap hit for one year, so a buyout isn't crippling, in terms of actual dollars.

I agree. Going into the playoffs, i could see a lot of teams interested in Briere. I think all this talk about Briere not being willing to leave the area are b.s. too. He was planning on playing the season in Germany if the lockout wasn't resolved. Last time I checked Germany isn't anywhere near Philly.

just for the record, i rarely if ever wish death on someone and especially not for their athletic performance. Its only if they cause the death of a human being or brutally beat animals to death after they fail to perform in a fight against others when trained by way of mauling other members of their species.

I generally reserve it for real evil doers, like bin Laden...or that bumhole in front of me doing 35 in a 50 MPH zone

No matter how crappy Danny plays during the reg season, teams will line up to get him for the playoffs. His numbers speak for themselves, and they will be able to buy him out at years end for just 3million and change.

Back to back games, weaker opponent, Bryz has started 25 of 27 games so far.

I was unaware he has started that many games. My bad.

Look at his numbers in the KHL and this year. He is turning into a stud

brian got homer twice, first with versteeg and now jvr...

though jvr is performing better then he ever did for us which hurts I really think luke will become a true top pairing dman, they just take longer.

I think they are sticking with the youth...that's why we aren't rumored in any major trades. Now it still might happen, but I'd be shocked if we traded any of our young guys versus Briere, Talbot, Feds, Knuble, etc.

If the Flyers were smart, they'd play out this season, coaching change or no, maybe trade some of the above for draft picks, get some good prospects, and go after some free agents this summer.

I'd rather they miss the playoffs and get some assets rather than make the POs and exit in the first round.

And if it takes the young guys suffering a down year to learn and get stronger for next season, so be it. And if - as MJL, jsaq and other suggest - it takes a coaching change to fully realize the potential of this squad, so be that as well.

....

I blame the whole organization, a lack of practice time, the Flyers' aggressive schedule for the first half of this shortened season, injuries, Lavi, and an under-performing team, at least offensively. Defensively, we have issues, as evidenced by the fact that we went after Weber and Suter only to end up with Foster, Gervais, Lilja and Gustafsson.

.......

I'm pretty much on a similar page...the injuries...I think things could have been better vis-a-vis the defensive depth if we had a healthy Mez and MAB as planned. It seems like the Flyers always have a key d man or two go down to ruin the party at some point.

I feel like this is a "lost" season. With the coaches and players having to adjust to injuries and the players that left the team it just wasn't meant to be in this shortened season, where there isn't that time for a team to endure a lot of adversity/growing pains during a season to emerge into a contender come playoff time. It's not gonna happen this season, with this team. With that said, I don't think a lot of change is warranted at this point as far as the roster. There are some very good young players here and it's not prudent to start dealing them away in a desperate reach for a "puck moving D man" or some other misguided pursuit. Flyers shouldn't be sellers unless it is (in the unlikely event of) getting value or needed capspace for 30+ guys like Briere, Gagne, Bryz and Timonen. If a bonafide #1 D becomes available in a fair deal or a modest overpayment (depending on the player), I'd probably go for it, as I believe one is needed within the next 1-2 seasons, but I'm not into say, selling low on a player like Couturier who is going through a classic sophomore slump, or Read who has excellent value at his cap-hit.

At this point I probably think the Flyers should more or less stand pat, ride it out, hopefully draft a top defensive prospect, move Briere...if he agrees to be traded to a contender, great, otherwise maybe buy him out with the amnesty. The Flyers cap situation looks a lot better without his 6.5 million hit on the chart. As far as Bryz, I'm torn...he's not a big part of the problem but he's not exactly living up to his contract. Ideally I'd like to see him play behind a more complete and cohesive team, one with more defensive discipline before concluding he's a bust and buying him out (w/ amnesty#2).

I'm on the fence about the coaching situation. I said when they hired Murray back that he could serve as a back up plan in case Lavy wore out his welcome. We may be getting near that point. I like Lavy's fire and I don't think his "system" is necessarily the biggest problem, but he has made some questionable/baffling decisions that seemed to hurt at times, and the team seems to lack defensive cohesion and discipline. If a Terry Murray can come in and start the team on a path of greater defensive responsibility, it could be the right move for this young team longer term. They should have enough offensive talent on the roster to be able to capitalize on turnovers and such generated from greater neutral zone pressure and a defense first mentality. Murray helped turn a really bad Kings team into a playoff team and eventual Cup winner. I think the Flyers (when healthy) are better than the Kings were when Murray took over for Crawford, so perhaps Murray's defensive discipline can give the Flyers the edge they need to get there. We'll see what happens.

Can you imagine if they lose tonight? Looking at their schedule it may be awhile before they win another game.
