Yes....their core.
Did you see Brown, Kopitar or Doughty play in the playoffs last year?
Who cares if Doughty has taken some time to get up to speed this year, you can't discount how good he was in the playoffs. He was clutch.
Kopitar is one of the best 2 way players in the game. Averaged a point a game in the playoffs last year and was a better player (and still is) than Carter and Richards. He's leading the team in points again this year. He's a +7 while Richards is a -6
Brown was a beast in the playoffs last year. Hitting everyone in sight and averaged a point a game as well.
That trade isn't even close. - Canuckleafer
Don't get me wrong, they played real well in the playoffs, but up until that point, that exact lineup excluding Carter, almost wasn't enough to make it into the 8th spot. Before the playoffs, they were looking to get rid of Brown, he's a heart and soul player, but not the most skilled. Doughty has been struggling, yes he had a good playoff run, but overall his seasonal play over the last couple of years has been mediocre for his pay. Kopitar is a great player, but the Kings need more offensive minded wingers, and when you have Richards and Carter as your top 2, I think you can afford trading one for other assets.

we just came off another lock out and teams still dont get it ! ! are Feaster and Murray related?
How can you build a contender when you throw money around like that? what are they gonna fill the other 22 roster positions with?

Nashville and Jersey I'm sure wish they got SOMETHING for their boys last year. - Mrbs71
yeah and i bet the rangers wish they hadnt signed Gomez and Drury to those contracts, and the Habs wish they hadnt got suckered into one of those contracts and blah blah blah
point being despite the precendence set teams will still make the same mistakes over and over, does it seem like the Ducks learnt anything from Gomez's contract? nope
so what makes you sure the Ducks wont just let Perry walk....being 2nd in the league right now gives them no choice and i doubt they would feel as confident going into the playoffs as a legit contender with Kessel vs Perry...so yes it might just go down like last year for Nashville and Jersey
thats just how it goes sometimes, either way its not gonna be as impactful to ANA as it was for the other 2 previously mentioned since Perry is NOT their only superstar (they still have 2-3) (same with Jersey as they had Kovy to fall back on) |

I get what you're saying. But if I'm LA, I'm wondering how that trade helps me. Everyone talks about creating a team which is tough to play against in the playoffs. The Leafs have done a much better job a that this year. Look at the past 3 cup winners, all 3 hit hard and had size. I just don't see how trading away Kopitar, Doughty and Brown for Kadri, Kessel and Phaneuf makes them a better team. If you are going to take away that size and 2 way play, you better be making up for it in pure skill. As good as Kadri has been for the Leafs this year now that he is actually getting a chance to prove himself, he is nowhere even close to the trade value of Kopitar. I'd take Brown over Kessel and for sure would take Doughty over Phaneuf. Reimer for Bernier is pretty much a wash. You are correct that last year around the trade deadline, there were reports of a possible trade for Brown. But that was a much different team. They played much better hockey leading into the playoffs - in fact were playing better hockey than anyone else in the league. I'd like to think if they were playing that well at the deadline, LA wouldn't have thought about trading Brown. |

I'd have to say, a lot of their success was due to Quick. Obviously the Leafs would have to give up more in a trade, picks and prospects, but I think it could benefit both teams, it's not like we'd be giving the Kings complete garbage back.
