Look I have met Iggy many of times. We don't call each other but I know a lot of people at the coliseum and my family has season tickets so we go to the meetings. Our kids have played together in kelowna a few times when we were out and about. He is a great guy, very good with kids and I can't say enough about him. He does love Calgary and I can see why you think he would stay.
However he is a true competitor and I have seen him talk with some frustration at times that he is not playing his best because he is the type to never put it on the team (at least not to a casual acquaintance like me). We did more small talk than anything substantial. However I think he wants a cup and I am pretty sure Calgary is not the favorite for the next 5 years. I think he would prefer to go by trade so he can bring enough assets back to calgary for his return.
I do think he is a Doug Weight type player in the sense that he was traded to Carolina at the deadline, won the cup and resigned with the Blues in the off season. I just really think he wants to finish off a great career with an attempt at a con smyth trophy. It is the type of player he is. Especially after being ROBBED in game 6 against TB.
Yes as an Oiler fan I do not believe that TB should have won the cup as the puck clearly crossed the line and Iggy should already have a ring. That will always be a black mark in NHL history. - bsteinley
Yeah I mean he may want to go, doesn't mean they will trade him though. The owners want him here IMO

I predict:
Anahiem: Getzlaf
to
Toronto: Phaneuf
Bozak
to
Edmonton: Ryan Whitney
Ales Hemsky
back to Ana
This is the theory on this one. Anahiem couldn't afford what Getzlaf wanted but Toronto could so they approved the price. Anahiem signed with Toronto's guarantee.
Toronto now has extra centers and needs to shed cap so they trade their highest paid dman and not their best and throws in an extra forward who frankly is under performing and is the best center to part with for the future of the team.
Edmonton gets the top 4 dman they haven't been able to land in 2 years but have to pay a huge salary to do it. Plus they get the third line center on a team that rolls all lines with lots of ice time. He would replace Horcoff going forward and probably have hartkinen and Paajarvii on both sides which will be a fast hard hitting line that can play a huge shut down role with dangerous offensive abilities.
Edmonton parts with Ryan Whitney to anahiem who they can sign at a good dollar figure and he can play top 4 minutes there. Plus they trade Ales Hemsky who at 29 is a great fit in Anahiem since they aren't afraid of veterans. Hemsky is Edmontons current goal leader and despite missing getzlaf they remain deep in center. Now if they don't want Getzlaf they might be interested in prospects or their 2nd round pick back from the oil + someone like Smid. Getting their pick allows for offer sheets and that might be of interest to them. - bsteinley

I was thinking that signing Getzlaf was only the beginning, now watch him ship Perry and his rights to some other team during the off season. |

I would be pretty shocked if he asked out (though I wouldn't blame him one second if he did). Just doesn't seem like the type that would do it. The question is whether ownership is willing to have an honest conversation with him or not. |

Sorry, but 8 years for 66 million makes no sense. Those who pay Perry the same are just as crazy. I’m not saying that he won’t get it but I would definitely stay away from those types of contracts if I was a GM. Look around the league and tell me which high priced player is worth their respective contracts, not many! Therefore, it is a gamble that has very little returns. Build a team based on character, presently there are many teams doing well based on character players and not high priced prima-donnas…. - Slimvinnie
But you never actually win the Cup with these "character" based teams. Legitimate first line centers such as Getzlaf are pretty much impossible to find/replace which is why they had to give him this deal. I love the assumption that every player who makes over $8M is a "high priced prima donna." |

Getzlaf is more than a PPG player his entire career, other than one off year last season. Watching every Ducks game, I know exactly how Getz can take over and dominate games of hockey. Very few players in the league have the passing skill that he has.
In short, he absolutely deserves this deal, and Anaheim have essentially paid fair market value for him. - niedermayer27

Anaheim will resign Perry, they can afford it, not sure why others are acting as if its doomsday for the Ducks and they must choose one over the other. Selanne will be off the books next season, so will Koivu. Plenty of cap space, if anything they'd deal Bobby Ryan first, given his displeasure and previous request for a trade. - ThePresident
This. Anaheim has $19.5M in cap space next season, even after taking this Getzlaf deal into account. If they move Hiller that adds an extra $4.5M in space.
If Perry wants to stay, Anaheim will have zero problem giving him the same deal. Murray has been planning for exactly this situation and has put the Ducks in a great position to sign both guys with cap space to spare. |

It's hard for some people to grasp this, but a lot of the time you really do have to overpay guys. |

Oh yeah, obviously there's a fine line...but I wasn't remotely surprised when I saw Getzlaf's deal.
Although to be fair to Stajan he is the only center on the team right now. |

Well this is a nice critique. I would like to have seen it if Getzlaf had gotten to July 5 and the Leafs had given him the same contract (cue "...b-b-but he would have signed a discount") - S Kaspar Rollins
they have Kadri now... no need for a big free agent signing... |
