I dunno man, it seems, by the results, you need alot more than you say. 3 great d prospects great shutdown guys in Fistric and N Schultz. So you are 1 dman away from being competent? It's also not the young guns being an issue, so Hall Nuge,Yakipov,Eberle and Gagner are not the issue. SO you need 1 more top 6 forward?
Keep hearing Lander and Hartkinnen (SP?) are good 3rd liners. And i KNOW Mike Brown's not an issue.
So in conclusion you are 1 D, 1 top six forward, 1 3rd line forward and some 4th liners away from being decent? Oh and a coach.

- walshyleafsfan

Its tough. Klefbom is a big d prospect that is suppose to be an immediate impact player on D for the team. I think we can all agree though, we are still one Elite Dman away.

As for forwards We have our top 6 it just that the coach plays Yakupov on the 4th line. Our third line is good when injuries are resolved with Hartkinen, and Paajarvi on the wing but they could use a good center. I don't want to insult leaf fans but Bozak would be a great fit with his numbers this year. Not many points but great at face offs. Plus he has decent size and speed to run with these fast and larger wingers.

Then there is a goalie. Edmonton needs one they can count on. Roly had a good year once but since then we haven't had one in almost 2 decades. We have the cap space and the assets remaining to compete for one of the 3 big names on the market (Backstrom, Smith and Lou).

Then we need a coach. Our coach had sound ideas when he talks but as soon as the game comes he throws them out the window and plays our worst players on the PP. I honestly think he either has a crush on Smyth or he is trying to lose the season. Either way I think the draft might be where we find our third line Center. I think the draft is deep enough that if they like a guy they would use a second round pick to move up to get him, maybe both and teams would do it to get a collection of youth. Edmonton is one team that has no place for 3 rookies on the team for probably the next 5 years but they can fit one or two good players.

To do this we need a good GM. Our current GM brought in J.Schultz (asked the Oilers to play with the team), Nail Yakupov (Owner had to override GM decision to pick him or we would have Murray), a back up goalie for the minors, Hordichuk (who never plays and at the time we had no room for him), Fistric (which turned out great but no one could have know that and he is still a last pairing dman) and Mike Brown (who I think is amazing at fighting but had less hits than RNH and Gagner last night (Mostly because Brown didn't have any). He also decided not to sign Linus Omark who has been devastating his league in Europe. A player who has Hemsky like talent but has not given the chance to develop like our other players. A player we could use at this particular moment in the season.

To do any of this we need to get rid of Lowe and by default that means MacT because he was hired as Lowe's assistant because they are BFF's. The position was created for Craig and I haven't seen anything become of it.

Which brings us to Katz, our owner. Smart business man. He wants his businesses to succeed as I think he swims in money at night and pays people to chia pet his kids hair. I think the hockey world is filtered to him through lowe which is the root of all evil.

In the End, the big things: new management across the board, a top 15 goalie, a top dman and a third line center.

Oilers young guys are still to young to Lead,I say another couple years before They can really Lead this team where all of us Oilers fans want to see them.
- AlEx_OiL

Nick Schultz is the Captain. Not Young and definitely not a gun. Well at least not one that can hit the net.

does edm fans even care about cogs and souray? i don't. i doubt any tor fans care how seguin and hamilton does or maybe there is. but i can tell ya i haven't seen on any forums or blog edm has looked back wishing souray or cog is still kicking around in edm.
- deks1

I still have a voodoo doll of souray but I don't give him as much attention as I do my Nylander, Heatley and Pronger dolls. I wish Cogs all the best but I don't think he is a good player. For future reference I also won't miss Belanger or Whitney when they are gone.

Maybe you guys wont finish dead last this year? probably not. How IS Seguin doing? Or The Nuge.. The word on the street in Red Deer is that he's a bust.. Not my words but thats what people are saying around here.. Harrrshhh seeing how he played here

- Arctic_AARDVARK

Nuge is good. He is 19 playing with an under performing team. There is talk of an injury they are waiting till off season to address but he shows signs of brilliance. He dominated the world Juniors on a team that lost so there was something that happened between then and now. It might just be coaching. He is a good kid and a dedicated player. I don't think any Oiler fans are doubting his ability or his future. The score sheet doesn't accurately depict his play on the ice.

As for last place, we again have to compete with Columbus in the west and they are quite the competitors with a strong lead.

Hopefully the team can use this horrendous loss as a tipping point. I mean, it can't get much worse. I can understand some of the Dubnyk criticism as he has a penchant for letting in some soft goals, but he is FAR from a problem. Similar to what that SOB Kreuger said, he's carried a ridiculous burden so far this season and he's performed admirably considering the situation he's been forced to face. If any player should be given some leeway, it's him. First the team can't score, then the defense is awful, and then both at the same time.
- MaximumBone

Thats what a starter has to do. A lot of starters are out there starting every game possible. Niemi, Quick, Howard, Rask, Miller, Lundquist, Nabokov, Lindback, Pavlec, Renne... The Oilers aren't looking for a goalie that can show up most nights, we need a goalie that is able to compete every night even if he has to play in a game that last through 5 OTs in the playoffs. That is what it takes to start.

We pay him 4 mil and compared to other goalies that is a good salary. He wanted the money but he also wants to give up excuses on why he let in poor goals. If he didn't ask for a huge contract then I would give him all sorts of time to develop but if he wants to be paid like a top 15 goalie, he needs to play like one. He made his bed when he accepted that cheque.

Nobody thinks MPS and Hartikainen are going to be allstars. They're most likely going to be 2/3 of our 3rd line in the future.
- Ihatebrianburke

I agree and maybe develop into great shutdown players with their speed and size. They do have offensive ability but the extent of that is a question mark and that is all just a bonus.

I got blasted on this board saying your first pick should have been Ryan Murray over Yakupov for that reason. "How can we pass on a franchise forward like Yak, I got? While Murray might or might not have played this season, he does just that. Your GM is too fixed on forwards - Eberle, Hall, RNH. Why would I get the feeling if somehow Edmonton drafts first again, it passes on Jones and takes Drouin or McKinnon?

No, I can't name another team in the league who goes a game without a dman carrying the puck through the neutral zone. Each of the other teams in your boat, point wise, all have one of those guys, well except Philadelphia who has to have 37-year old Kimmo Timonen do it and he isn't that strong at it anymore.

Unfortunately, you will have to use one of your big guns to acquire a solid two-way blueliner that can not only play solid defense, but move the puck and put some points up. Of course, it doesn't help your big guns outside of Gagner aren't doing much.

And you're still wrong. We needed both so you take the better of the two. Murray was not the answer and I'm extremely happy that they took Yak over him.

Murray was badly overhyped. I had zero issue with that pick.

Yeah tough to look at this team this year and suggest we didn't need anymore scoring.
