MacKinnon or Jones?
- Reveen

i think this might be the first draft in awhile where you see a team draft on need, as there doesn't seem to be a clear cut #1.

if the oil have it, the obviously take jones. if the jackets have it though, they probably take mackinnon or drouin (they have a decent D, but are super weak up front).

if florida or the islanders end up with it.....who the hell knows.

So who should the Oil target?

Bernier?
Lehner?
Miller or Enroth?
Hiller?
Allen or Elliott?
Backstrom?

The problem for us is defense.

Can you name any other team in the league who goes one game - let alone several - without a slap-shot from the point getting on net and creating a rebound?

How about any other in the league who goes a game without a dman carrying the puck through the neutral zone?

There is no credible threat to create offense on a consistent basis except when Hall, Gagner, and occasionally Hemsky touches the puck. We're all too easy to key on without a dynamic defender or two

man, with ottawa's luck with injuries this year, and hemsky's injury history, i'd refuse simply based on the fact that his plane would probably crash on the way to ottawa

in all seriousness though, not sure the sens would want to take him. not a knock at all against him as a player, i just think they want to save that cap space to make a move for perry (or someone else) in the offseason

think i would rather a package centered around maybe PRV, fits in better with the sens team (swedish, haha)

Pavelec / Dubnyk

Enstrom / J.Schultz
Smid / Petry
N.Schultz / M.Fistric

That is 8 mil in Goal tending and it just wouldn't happen. I think those might be the only two untouchable guys in WPG unless they got a goalie and dman back. They are not deep on d and they have no backup.

Minnesota is a real possibility since they have a lot of salary tied up and could use young guys, plus their d aren't deep and I like the idea of:

Shultz, Someone
Sultz, Petry
Klefbom, Fistric

With Peckhams game lately he might actually have some good value. He was a force tonight and for a team that needs a fistric type player, he would be a perfect fit. Plus we have Whitney and Smid as extras which can help us land a goalie. Dmen are a hot commodity. I think Edmonton should try to get what they can for duby (maybe pho since they are losing both) and try to sign a big name. Targets being Mike Smith, Lou or Backstrom. All of them are on teams that need cheap d or forwards, which means performing prospects usually. Edmonton has a lot of those.

Normally I would say that in conference/division would keep this from happening but this is not a normal year and people will need to do whatever it takes to drop below that cap. Each of these teams have different circumstances forcing them to dump salary and Edmonton is one of the few teams that can A. take it on and B. has been collecting prospects like baseball cards. I think Nashville showed us that a top goalie and a crappy team can do the trick.

honestly, i am biting my tongue and say no. it's still not the number one concern. two game without a goal...where the hell are the scorers...out for lunch? second, the d-man group was probably atrocious. if yesterday vs wings edm lost 5-7, today if they loose 4-6, then i'd consider more towards a new goalie, but there is no goals! like the team can't even put it in the net! it's not like edm is tampa, tampa is the one team has the high goals for and highest goals against in the league, they need a goalie, edm...one of the lowest goals for...

two goalies i always wished edm acquired...andersson when he was let go by florida, i had a gut feeling he was going to be spectacular and late bloomer. bishop...a 2nd round pick for bishop is not a arm and leg price to pay for his talent level.

Thoughts, Reveen? I think that if the Fans can Figure Out What The Frank Is really happening with the Oilers, Than Why cant Tamponilinni figure it out? That Trade is good for both Teams.

I got blasted on this board saying your first pick should have been Ryan Murray over Yakupov for that reason. "How can we pass on a franchise forward like Yak, I got? While Murray might or might not have played this season, he does just that. Your GM is too fixed on forwards - Eberle, Hall, RNH. Why would I get the feeling if somehow Edmonton drafts first again, it passes on Jones and takes Drouin or McKinnon?

No, I can't name another team in the league who goes a game without a dman carrying the puck through the neutral zone. Each of the other teams in your boat, point wise, all have one of those guys, well except Philadelphia who has to have 37-year old Kimmo Timonen do it and he isn't that strong at it anymore.

Unfortunately, you will have to use one of your big guns to acquire a solid two-way blueliner that can not only play solid defense, but move the puck and put some points up. Of course, it doesn't help your big guns outside of Gagner aren't doing much.

I'll be really surprised, if the Oilers don't make a significant move, after getting spanked by the Predators tonight. It's time that the Oilers move a significant piece for a significant piece. Something like Taylor Hall for Jake Gardiner and Tyler Bozak. Reunite Gardiner with Schultz and add a number 2 center.

Bishop for Hemsky..... thoughts

Hemsky has been consistently our best point per game player for a decade. He is one of our best players during pressure situations and that includes shoot outs. He is our current leading goal scorer despite really only having 1 line mate and a random cycled through (sometimes smyth which doesn't count).

For Bishop, who despite his size doesn't really seem much different than Duby. He had a few good games with Ottawa but he also had some terrible ones as well. At 26 I think we might be trading for a goalie that at best is slightly better than duby, if that. Hemsky is an elite player and he may get injured a lot but he is still almost always near the top of our team despite missing huge chunks of the season. This year he might only miss a couple games and he might have an amazing final total that is well ahead of our second best player.

I think he is better than Bishop. I think other fans might not agree but hockey scouts know his value. He is out performing Eberle and Nuge this year, that is a good pawn to secure a top 10 goalie. Not another temp.

Its tough to say, teams play a more offensive game when they don't have to play goalie on top of it. When you trust your goalie you are free to offensively check in your end. Who knows what the Oilers would look like with a goalie they had confidence in. No more leaving guys alone behind the net, screening our own goalie, sitting in front of our net rather than keeping their feet moving so when it comes out front they can react rather than just reach and hope and challenge the point instead of this putting half a leg out to block.

Watch Vancouver play, they pressure the weaker teams like Nashville so they don't get anything going in their end. Its not better D, it is because they leave Lou the shooter and take the passer.

I think it's a fair trade. We need a number one centre and you need some mobility on the back end. Bozak is a decent faceoff man and can play at number 2 or 3 at center.
