They have to find a way to win, end of story, this is the type of game that will show us if this team is different from what we have seen the past 3-4 years.

Sorry guys...it wont end until he either signs or is traded...From TSN an hour ago:

Craig Custance of ESPN.com listed the top 20 players who have expiring contracts at the end of the season that could help out teams trying to make a push. Anaheim Ducks forward Cory Perry, Ottawa Senators winger Daniel Alfredsson, New Jersey Devils forward David Clarkson, Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla and Washington Capitals centre Mike Ribeiro top the list.

- Colin Dambrauskas

Not your fault! You would really think if the Flames were going to re-sign him it would be done by now, no? Maybe they are using it to motivate him? Motivate the team? Man i'd love to be a fly on the wall in Feasters office.

The thing is just like Colin said yesterday, the bottom line is the goal of franchise (ultimately) is to make money. Keeping Iggy gives them the assurance the money will flow for the next 3-4 years.

OK this one is for you. How to rebuild in one full swoop.
1/ First trade is Iggy to Boston for Spooner, 2013 1st, 2013 2nd& a conditional 2014 1st if he resigns with the Bruins
2/Trade Cammi to Anaheim for Winnik & Anaheim 2013 1st
3/Trade Gio & Stempniak & a 2014 2nd to Buffalo for Tyler Myers
4/Butler & Comeau to Ottawa for Bishop & a 2013 3rd
5/ Trade Macdonald to Carolina for a 2013 3rd
it shakes out: Tanguay Backlund Sven
Cervenka Stajan Hudler
GlenX Winnik Horak
Begin Jones Jackman/Mcgratten

JBO/Myers
Wideman/Brodie
Smith/Sarich

Kipper/Bishop

We'll have 3 1st rounders this draft, 1 2nd & 3 3rd's & a possible extra 1st if Iggy resigns with Boston. Then I would pull a Brian Burke & package whatever I had to to get 2 top 3 picks at this years draft. There you go.

- Kevin R

Why do we need Bishop? Cervenka is now playing Centre, and I doubt he will go back to wing. Hartley obviously doesn't see any use in Jones. And Iggy is staying put. Other than that, I like it, especially the defence.

Still doesn't solve our #1 centre problem either.

I think if the Flames do trade iggy (which they won't) it will be for young current NHL roster players I.E. a guy like O'reilly. I don't think the Flames will take a chance on a kid in junior packaged with a late first rounder, they are going to want to get some more immediate help.

Depending what kind of prospect Spooner is> Is he going to be a first line centre? If so I think him and a 1st would do. If his ceiling is a 2nd line centre then maybe you would have to add a another prospect or a 2nd.
- whipper334

I would also add a conditional 1st in 2014 if BOS either makes it to the finals or resigns Iggy.

Here is something I was thinking about this morning. It's likely a long shot because I'm not so sure St Louis would even consider moving him.

To St. L- Tanguay, Stajan, Butler

To CGY- Berglund, 1st

I know they like Berglund there but they are at a stage where they need to make the tough decisions to win a cup. I read a bit on St. L needs, and for the longest time they've been looking for a L shooting D for the top 4 to play with Shattenkirk or Petro. I've also recently read that they need a play making forward. To me this trade makes sense for both teams. Butler is a steady D that is capable of playing top 4; he would compliment Shatt wuite well I think. Of course Tangs is a tremendous playmaker. Stajan has been a good 3rd line C this year.

Thoughts? Am I completely out to lunch (haven't finished my coffee yet)?

You guys have to start thinking 4th dimensionally. The cap space you gain is used to sign a highend centre. No one, absolutely no one is going to give us a #1 centre in return for a UFA Iggy. Spooner will be our potential #1 c as he transitions to the NHL over the next 2 years. Look how long its taken Backlund to start showing his #2C pedigree. Not sure if Backs can take it any higher, remains to be seen. But at least Spooner has already been developing but he's in tough with all the centres Boston has. Jankowski is far far away, probably 2 years before he even hits the radar. It was a good pick if you had a full cubboard of NHL ready bluechips, but in my mind, we need help now!!!!!! Maata & Seiloff with Witherspoon represent some good prospects on D in the system at least.

I want Bishop because he is on the cusp of having value like Schneider & Bernier & it gives us an immediate option. Depending on how Ramo translates, with Bishop, we could get another potential 1st at next years trade deadline. Remember,we are trying to shorten a rebuild & use as many 35+ assets to bring in as many blue chippers as possible. Look, we all love Kipper & Iggy, but this team needs to rebuild to an extent that is hotly debated. We have nothing in Abottsfd that can translate to excellent replacement levels if we go through a rash of injuries. If Kipper & Iggy love Calgary so much, the city would embrace them to Management & goaltender coach & still be part of the Flames. Since 1989 we have had only 1 playoff run past the 1st round & that was in 2004. Not good enough for me and I aint getting any younger. We have ownership that will spend $$$ to put a winning team on the ice & we're pissing it away with mediocre teams & hero worshipping players that will help us better in the long run if they move on. JMO bro.

St Louis is a decent trade partner, but I dont think Butler would interest them & I doubt Flames would move Stajan at this point because we are a little thin on true Centre options. Tanguay & Hartley are pretty tight & have won a Cup together & I see Tanguay(who loves Calgary) as the veteran to lead & grow our young players through a retool/short rebuild.

I just want to focus on your comment about Stajan for a second. Are you saying that if all other things were a go, you wouldn't do the trade because Stajan has been decent?! BErglund can be a #1 C- I know we are short on natural C but I would trade 3 Stajans for 1 Berglund; 24yrs old big & skilled. That's a great building block.

I agree completely with this. #1C's don't move, at least not until after they've passed their prime. You need to pick up a bunch of young kids that can turn into #1 Centers...

That's only $450,000 less than Crosby and Malkin.

Getzlaf's agent deserves a medal.

Yeah I agree! It's a long term high cap hit but the Ducks had no choice if they wanted to keep him IMO.

And you would think Ryan and/or Perry will be gone at the deadline...

You know now if Perry was to stay if wouldn't be for a penny less.
