Maybe, depends on what you call an overpayment. One man's treasure is another man's trash. What does Stevie want to get his team to the next level?
Though I do agree, for the Hawks, where they are, what they need, they will likely have to overpay a bit to do just about anything.
That said, and I have a blog coming on this, I believe the Hawks know they are close but NOT a slam dunk to win the Cup and that they can improve this roster. Bowman also likely remembers what unforeseen Stanley Cup bonuses and other factors did to him in the summer of 2010, when he lost Niemi for no compensation and kinda got hosed on Ladd as well. Nt to mention lost credibility at that time.
In all likelihood, a rostered player would go in a deal that brings a meaningful rostered player in. You deal from strength in order to fill an area of need. A pending free agent with a high asking price could be what goes the other way. - John Jaeckel
Yup. I'm thinking Stalberg too :-P
As for TB's asking price, I would imagine a 1st would land you Thompson. And I'd rather trade that pick rather than a McNeill or similar prospect.
However the interesting thing is, when it comes to trading a roster player, that likely means the Hawks shopping options expand beyond free-agent-to-bes a little. |

Wonder if a later round pick and a kid from Rockford would work. Like Morin and a 4th. - prd797
listen, Nate Thompson is not going in the Hall of Fame, but this guy is an incredibly useful hockey player for a winning NHL team. You probably have to give that back. Morin might never be that and the same is likely true of a 4th rounder. |

Hawks first, 26th to 30th? Yes. Now a lot of morons would go nuts with a "first rounder for a 4th liner"? Which is dumb.
Where do most guys drafted 26th to 30th end up? As scouts or tending bars. But even if that pick panned out, so what? Thompson is the kind of player they need to get over the top now. You have to give to get.

Not if it helps land you a big acquisition...I'd trade him (plus) for Iginla, especially if our top 6 has injury issues closer to the deadline. |

Exactly...and what makes it extremely palatable as well is the stocked cupboard of prospects of that caliber anyway (Pirri, Morin, Danault, McNeill, both Hayes., etc) |

You're right Dru...the return should be worth the payment...but i'd rather have Tanguay than Iggy off CGY's top line. He's one of the best assist, playing making wingers in the league and Hoss and JT would love playing with him. |

Once again just thinking out loud.
Would Stalberg, Teravainen (or similar quality prospect), a d prospect and a 1st land you Corey Perry?
I understand that if they trade him, it won't be to the Hawks, especially if the two stay where they are in the standings, but in terms of a return... |

That's fair enough. The guy does seem like a sound player, certainly a good depth scorer. That being said, would you think the guy could slot in somewhere other than the 4th line, JJ? |

I know why the Sox wanted to do this, this season - avoid the huge arbitration payday in a year.
However....
Five years for a pitcher who has already had arm issues with the type of delivery he has is comical.

With the Big lead in the Central this is a great chance to bring 3 forwards up and let them play. - PEIHawkFan
The Hawks have the full 23 players allowed on the active roster. They can't call anyone up unless someone is put on the 7 day IR, which Sharp is almost a lock to go on IR. Otherwise the flu bug isn't a reason to put anyone on IR.
So we might see one guy from Rockford called up, but only if Sharp (or someone else) goes on IR. |

LOL touché on the Cup...and I suppose that Avs team is comparable to this Hawks team in that they've got a ton of firepower.
I may be convinced...depending on the return. He's also signed to a very palatable 3.5 for the next 3 seasons. |

Getzlaf is close to re-signing so I doubt he's going anywhere...Perry is likely going UFA (if he's not traded). |
