Love this stat:

According to ESPN Sports Science, an NHL hit is 17% harder than an NFL hit even though the players are 20% smaller. Makes you realize when a guy like Chara gets full on with a hit, it's best to prepare for a rough landing!

Great just what some of the Isles soft players need to read.

Cool stat!

Force = Mass x Acceleration. NHL players are 20% smaller, but they are flying on skates compared to football players. Proves that hockey can be a dangerous game.

Yeah...and some of the smaller NHL players, especially the feisty ones not afraid to mix it up physically with larger opponents...the long-term toll on their bodies is probably damn rough.

The unique thing about Page is that he wrote songs for guitar that you can't play without figuring out how to tune the guitar the way he tuned it to play them, if that makes any sense. Those are the guys who are the "best" guitar players, to me- the guys who do unique things with the instrument. Another example is Steve Howe.

As for Van Halen, I can think of two guys who in my view set the table for him, right off the top of my head- Steve Hackett and Al DiMeola. Both play a very similar sounding style.....with a pick (listen to "The Return of the Giant Hogweed", for one example). In fact, if you listen to the version of "Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars" off the live album with McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that Van Halen is anywhere near as good as DiMeola....just my opinion on that one.

I also think that of his contemporaries, I personally prefer Nuno Bettencourt (even though MOST of THEIR music is cr*p.....more on the difference between these two concepts below)- of course, it was still EVH's style that Nuno plays, so the credit must be given where it is due. All of that said, my all time favorite "metal" albums (assuming LZ, Sabbath and Deep Purple are above and beyond the concept of "metal") are King Diamond's "Abigail", and the live album Opeth recorded at Royal Albert Hall.

PS- to me, "the best" is largely a high school concept, that usually doesn't take some things into consideration. For example, if you ask me for my top ten favorite albums, I'm going to respond with a bunch of prog rock (Yes, Gabriel Genesis, Family, Gentle Giant), along with a couple of newer items (Lateralus, OK Computer). However, if you ask me what "the best" album is, the first thought that comes to my head is Aja, by Steely Dan, which barely makes my top 25 "favorites". The reason is that is one of the few albums recorded when it was recorded that doesn't really need to be RE-mastered. The engineering and musicianship is incredible- and it should be, as it took about 30 musicians and singers a whole year to record seven songs.....five of which still get played on the radio, pretty much all the time.

PPS- I remember seeing a movie of something by The Who ("The Kids are Alright", if I remember correctly) where you can set up the DVD to just watch each one of the four musicians exclusively. My suggestion would be to just watch John Entwistle....speaking of great "lead" guitarists .

Completely different style. I love DiMeola, I love every player mentioned, but Ed's playing comes from somewhere different. He's a born natural, someone who doesn't need to practice...he is music. He's not the most technical, but technical doesn't always win. He's a rare combination of technique, ridiculous feel (his rhythm playing is off the charts) and just a complete natural like noone else. He's like a bopop musician playing rock. He's not the most versatile, but that's what make him unreal at what he is...a living rock legend. DiMeola is great technically, but he's too controlled...almost robotic, and that comes from practicing to be perfect, something Ed is not. He's too dirty, gritty and aggresive for that.

Nuno is another total natural. In fact, if he were in a more popular band, he'd probably of taken the reigns from Ed into the 90's.

In Ted Templemans words, and I paraphrase..."I've worked with Everyone from Vai to Holdsworth (he mention even more greats) but none of them even come close to being the musician that Eddie Van Halen is.

I am a guitar geek....been playing a long time...taught the instrument, played millions of gigs, studied everyone. To me, and I don't expect many people to understand it on the level that I do, Ed is a musical genious. He will probably be looked back in history books as one of the greatest musicians of this time period. His ears are second to none, he hears things that are inhuman, and his ability to swing is ridiculous....give the tune "I'm the One" a spin for his shuffle abilities, listen to "push comes to shove" or Holdsworth type stuff, listen to Catherdral, Mean Street intro for innoovation, Spanish Fly.....try to cover Sinner's Swing (almost impossible).

we of course know of the few documented suicides to a couple of former enforcers in the league. I can't help but wonder if those numbers will ramp up with a few everyday players being included over the next couple of decades. The speed of the game increased so much during the 1980's and then player size ramped up in the 1990's. Today they're bigger and faster than ever before. I've skated with minor leaguers before and was stunned at how fast the game was at first. I can only imagine what it's really like being out there and processing the game at an NHL speed where getting caught looking down at the wrong time (Lindros) can change your life forever.

This battle could go on for years!
I too have played in bands for ages, composed music etc. Now the things you touch on with Eddie are the very reasons why I put Page at the top. His understanding of orchestration and building layers of guitars was second to none. Songs like Achilles Last Stand, presenting multiple layerd scales ascending and descending were sheer brilliance. As for feel, solo's like that on Tea For One and Stairway were not only considered some of the most brilliant ever, but were done in ONE take. Eddie was a technical champion but it was the natural feel of players like Hendrix and Page that allowed them to play their music differently every night with total variations. I can think of a lot of guys in that area that were better from 'mood' player than EVH, but couldn't match his technique. Even a guy like Robert DeLeo plays awesome solo's from listening perspective but none will drop your jaw. My favorite solo from EVH was always on 'When it's Love' simply because it was very Claptonesque. It wasn't the same ol' finger tapping, half mute wammy stuff he seemingly played on 90% of his songs but true feel. He obviously was capable of better solos but I think he often chose speed over texture.

Which stat should I use? The not winning a playoff game since 1993? The fact that you finished last in the division how many times in a row? Yeah, tell me again how the isles are as good as the Rangers.

This is crazy, the refs would NEVER allow the Isles fans to type this drevel on the Rags site. Yet the Rags fans came in here and troll for days saying they are just kidding...

Bullpoop, it is trolling..

- bixll

If they lost they'd be saying it wasn't a good time for them to deal with it. They'd whine and one of them would pm a ref. That's what they do. Whine, troll, complain. Except a few

And the equipment. I think that really hit home when I saw an interview with Pronger in a game shortly after he was traded to the Flyers. I couldn't believe how ridiculous those shoulder pads were. It's not like he's even close to the only one, that just happened to be the first time I really noticed how crazy the equipment's gotten compared to the...I guess now-distant past. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the equipment scaled down a bit.

I go back and forth on the idea of a bigger rink, too.

Let me clarify this for you, you brain dead idiot, the Rangers are a MUCH better team than the isles. More than half your team should be playing in the AHL. You have been the joke of the NHL for more than 20 years. LoserLMAO

I was listening to an interview with Brad Marsh on the radio one night. For those of you too young to remember, Brad Marsh was the last guy in the NHL to not wear a helmet. He said that he wore a helmet one game in his career and got a concussion. He went on to say that he had gone his whole career without any major head injuries but that night he took over half a dozen stick shots to the head. He went home and told his wife, "I'm never wearing that thing again" and played the rest of his career without any major issues.

I think equipment has galvanized playes to take risks they wouldn't otherwise do as well as causes them to also show less concern for the safety of their opponents.

Congrats, your team is so much better then the "lowly Islanders", a whole 3pts better. Islanders fans aren't stupid, we know the issues. The sad part is the Islanders are truly a good coach and 1-2 players away from being one of the better teams in the conference. We are being held hostage by an idiot for an owner.
