Honestly, I'm not at every practice or in the locker room when the coaches do their thing with the players. I'm sure the blame falls on everyone.
- stveshdy

at some point you look at results. when i see the same thing over such an extended period - specifically, their inability to handle lockdown teams like NYR & NJ or play that way when they need to- i attribute it mainly to the coaching.

The whole (frank)ing team has regressed. It's a poop show around him. Not sure why people are getting on his case. He'll be fine. He's still good defensively.
- feelingkettle

Yep. Still not on the fire the coach bandwagon. The alternatives are repulsive.

If the 8th and Voracek was viewed as an overpayment for Carter(keep in mind his very friendly contract too) what does Read and let's say the 8th get us?

Do you believe they are going to excel playing such a style? I dont know.

Bryzgalov will be worn to a pulp, and the D is very mistake prone, and bad in transition. The forwards aren't too great along the boards either. They get beat physically pretty often in their own zone.

We will see.

I don't view it as trying to save the season, I view it as the first step to breaking the bad habits and starting to learn good ones.

If that results in somehow saving the season, great...but this is a young team & I'm more concerned with avoiding bad habits that become ingrained.

How can I be? There is no forward movement. They are sinking. And I see no sign of the changes that need to be made. No adjustments. Other then the little wrinkle in the D zone play. Tells me that this Coach is unwilling to change.

Would you let him finish out the year or make a change?

Leighton will get his chance to be the backup again next year. 1 yr 860K

And guess what, if the Flyers play the same way next year as they are currently. It again won't matter!

My general point is if Coburn plays top 4 minutes he needs to be able to generate offense by using his skating ability or crisp outlet passes to spring the forwards. Unfortunately, he doesn't do neither very well. Kimmo still has very good passing skills. Basically 3 of the team's top 4 d-man act more as stay at home guys especially when the coach employs an attacking style with d-men constantly pinching.
- ravishingone

I understand. But the outlet passes are a dual responsibility. The forwards have to be coming back far enough, and working hard enough to get clear and give him safe outlets. They are not. Consequently even our "better" passers like Timonen look horrible when trying to clear the zone our outlet the puck. Coburn has shown in the past that he can play well with a solid supporting cast. The problem is none of these guys is Bobby Orr, and that's just about what you'd need to be to succeed as a defenseman on this team.

Last year it took 92 points to get into the PO's. Using my fuzzy math, that means it'll take 54 points to squeeze in this year.

The Flyers have 23 points after 25 games. Loosely calculating, that means they'll need 31 points over the next 23 games to get to the dance.

Doable?

The key phrase. Lack of attention to detail. When the same thing keeps happening over and over. When the entire team plays the same way in situations on the ice. You know that it's not a player decision. But it is by design. They play that way in games because that is how they practice, and that is how they drill.
- MJL

or not enuf is taken into account by the coaches to put the right plyrs in position. there seems to be no consequences except w/ the goalies...lather, rinse, repeat, ad infinitum...

Been very diappointed with Couts, but have to be patient with him. He's really pressing.

Just reiterate, Lavy has a short shelf life, we were told this when he took over. The team is regressing and displays a pattern of in effectiveness against teams that play a certain way, fail to play 60 minutes this being incapable of protecting leads.

None of those guys (save Talbot) is really a tradeable commodity.

I was thinking more in terms of Giroux, Couturier, BSchenn, Wayne Simmonds, Matt Read, Jake Voracek, etc.

You know. The core of the team.

- johndewar

I'd keep the core if possible. No doubt in my mind if they can't trade Briere(and him willing to waive his no trade clause) he will be bought out. Just not enough cap room for an anchor like him at $6.5. Ask him his teams he'd accept a trade to an get best you can. I'm on the fence with Bryz because 1, it's not his fault and 2, who would replace him at a lower hit with comparable ability.

Agreed, and that is why I'm concerned about the coaching philosophy. You can have an aggressive forecheck and still be defensively responsible (ie Rangers-man, does that hurt to write. ) . This team not so much.

Yep, this appears to happen to Lavy every place he coaches. Starting to look like it was inevitable.

And Giroux is -6. They are not very good 5v5 at all. They've really lived and died by the PP... it's pretty much gotten them all their points this year
- eayost

I thought I heard something like 37% of all of Philly's goals are on the PP, is that true?

That would explain a lot of the -'s..

Your ready to move on.

The GM has a tough decision to make. The question is does management feel like a lot of the problems fall on the coach.
