The coach has been questionable at times this year but the GM has put together the current roster.

I'll be upset to see Laviolette fired. There's a difference between liking a guy-and I like Laviolette-and thinking he should remain as head coach.

Frankly, Ive played this game before. Asking questions to try and direct a conversation into a dead end that benefits you. I chose to stop playing a long time ago, if you havent noticed. However that is another matter, that I dont really care about.

I am not going to debate whether Columbus plays "hard". If you think that is a hard working team, that puts in enough effort consistently then alright. That is laughable.

Whether the Flyers have the structure in place needed to win, or more specifically the defensive structure? Perhaps they do not, and it could be improved at the very least. They also do not have enough players who work hard to begin with, or a good enough D. There is a lot more missing to this team, than a better coach.

- flyer_nutter

It has nothing to do with benefiting me. It has to do with the facts. And trying to point out the facts. Like I said, you obviously haven't watched Columbus play much. And it points to your black and white opinion of win equals effort. Lose equals lack of effort.
Opening of the period. All 3 Flyers forwards are below the circle near the goal line. Timonen stands up on the play, whiffs on the bouncing puck. 2 on 1 the other way for the winning goal! Look familiar? Go back to the 3rd period of Tuesday's game against the Rangers.
Now the Pens get the lead in the 3rd. What does their Coach do? He changes their forecheck, and they check the Flyers. They stay on the right side of the puck. They challenge the Flyers in the neutral zone. All 5 players back in deep to support the puck when the Flyers chip it in. And they made short crisp passes on the breakout to move the puck. Or simple chips out to center ice. And they got the puck deep in the Flyers zone to make the Flyers go the full length of the ice. That is how you hold leads in this League. Are you even aware of the system changes that the Pens Coaches made in the 3rd? Or is it just simply that the Pens played with more effort? Have you seen the Flyers play that way? Or seen any signs that they're capable of it? Or that they're Coached to play that way? Flyers are a one trick pony. No forecheck, no offense. And they certainly aren't going to use defense to turn puck over to create offense.

Timonen is still good. He's just not good enough to compensate for the complete lack of structure and discipline on this team. Especially not when he's battling an injury like he is now.

He would look much much better if we had any semblance of responsible structure or discipline, as would the rest of the D. Right now he is taking too many risks and getting caught more than normal because the Flyers are either chasing the game or hemmed in their own end or both. The issues on this team are primarily with the forwards, and the way the coaches have them playing.

Don't get me wrong, Gervais does suck, and he should never ever be out on the PK like he seems to be lately. But that is by no means the biggest issue.

Kimmo at this point in his career is a good piece in a d core, not the key cog. The problem is Coburn has never taken the next step of being more consistent in his own zone. Also, with his skating ability you would think he would be able to carry the puck better to help generate offense better, but he doesn't. We have good stay at home d-men in Schenn and Grossman, Kimmo can be effective, but I just see there has to be an upgrade to Coburn in the top 4. Gus is what he is, a third pairing guy who can add a little bit of offensive punch. He can be effective in that role, but to expect more is unrealistic.

You just know though, that it would be so like them to go out and win 5 straight.

homer tried. should have had fall back plans in place though.
If he landed weber, everything is different.

He has to improve the team significantly between now and october though.

Murray for all of his good work, struggled to get consistency for the Kings as well.

He doesnt seem to me, like the guy who can take this team to the top. Murray also hasn't won a playoff round in how long? Murray scares me. Too much of a Stevens vibe.

His ties are ugly as well.

- flyer_nutter

I'm looking at him as a short term, interim guy. Not interested in hiring him on a permanent basis. Want him to come in, instill discipline, teach the kids how to play better two way hockey and hold people accountable.

Then hire a Dallas Eakins or Jon Cooper in the summer.

Not sure that was ever realistic for Coburn, but he does seem to be struggling this year. But the entire D is too, largely because they get zero help from the forwards. I think you could stick Shea Webber back there and he's look pretty average with the amount of support this team provides.
