I do think that if Pronger does retire the Flyers attempt to get the deal voided or be permitted to utilize a compliance buyout on Pronger.

The NHL confirmed to capgeek that over 35 deals are eligible to be nuked by a compliance buy out.

I also disagree with the cap recapture penalty.

And I'm not necessarily saying make it an exception just for Pronger, but allow teams to use one of their compliance buyouts on an injured/35+ player. That would only be applicable until 2014.

Nope, players who are injured can not be bought out. That is why the league stepped in with the Gomez/Redden rule. Those guys would have been forced to sit for a year, because their teams were going to dump them and they wanted to avoid injury risk.

I mean it screws over a team because a guy sustained a freak injury and if the player doesn't want to screw over his team, he shouldn't retire.

I definitely agree with that. This rule should only affect deals signed under the current CBA. Those contracts were approved by the NHL.
