Points needed to have a realistic playoff chance: 54 (1.12/game)

Through 24 games: 23 points (0.96 per game)

Need 31 points in remaining 24 games (1.29 per game)

um...

I agree, somewhat, but take a look at those teams... It was only that top line ever. Murray is one of the better defensively sound coaches and has the great ability to adjust. But with this group of guys, just like we perfectly saw illustrated in LA, is that his teams generally are not high scoring, and high-end skilled players do not excel in his system. LA could barely put up 1 goal a game last year under him. He's not the right choice for this team, and I think we would be ill-advised to give him a chance.

The other lines on those teams simply were not that good. Outside of Brind'Amour, the teams that Murray had here were not that talented after the Legion of Doom. Trent Klatt was a flash in the pan. Kevin Dineen and Dale Hawerchuk were well past their primes. Guys like Podein, Otto and MacTavish were defensive specialists.

The thing is, I'm more concerned with developing the young players than record this year, and that's why I'd go with Murray or Paddock.

Like saq said if you go 4-17 to the NJD and NYR in the last two seasons your not going to get very far in the playoffs...These guys need a coach that will teach them to play the right way. They need a guy that will show them that a good defense can actuallly lead to a better offense.
- Philly1980

I know my bias for Lavi isn't letting me see the situation objectively, but I just don't think he's the major problem here. I think our team doesn't come out consistently enough with the same type of effort. It seems we're the best team in the league on some nights, and just so, so, so flat on others.

I worry that a guy like Murray could alienate some players with his hard-nosed defensive and no bull-poop style. I worry that what we're seeing out of Voracek now, under Lavi, could evaporate in an instance under Murray due to the system change.

This season reminds me of the 09-10 season. Injuries and uneven play ruled. Stevens was fired, Lavy hired and they clinched a spot on the final night of the season. Then made a nice playoff run into the Cup Finals.

I think Danny boy waves to goto a cotender...if he doesnt im sure the flyers will tell him they will buy him out in the offseason.
- Philly1980

If I were him I would ride out the season and if the Flyers want to buy me out, I then at least collect my pay and can choose where I want to go in the off season.

There is a similar feeling. Wonder if this group has it in them to flip the switch

If I were GM.. Id move Briere for just about anything... seeing how Id be buying him out at seasons end anyway.

My biggest fear is that Holmgren will trade Schenn or Couts for Corey Perry.

So Flyers-Hawks round DOS?
- jak521

There's enough talent on this roster to make it happen.

The Flyers upcoming schedule before the deadline is Penguins, Devils, and Bruins x 2, Rangers, Lightening, Islanders, Sabres, Capitals. If historical results are any indication, Flyers will lose to Rangers, Devils Twice, Lightening, split the Penguins and Bruins, win against the Islanders and Sabres and probably Capitals. So 5 and 6. I don't think that would put them far enough out of the playoffs to be sellers or to fire Lavy. I doubt we see much of any change this season.

I'd wait and hope to maximize the asset, if he even decides to waive the clause.

I was thinking something like this the other day. At the very least, we've got the doom and gloom at the halfway marker from that season.

If they go 5-6 (10 points in 11 games) they're toast.

Exactly, we need to use this as a measuring-stick for potential moves...

I was a LOT more doom and gloom that year. I still think there's a ton of talent on this team and that they can make the playoffs. But the push has to come soon.

I do think if they are under .500 after Sunday's game that changes will come.

Holmgren has repeatedly said that he's not trading from the young core.

We'll see if it holds true -- because things change -- but I have faith that he won't make a panic trade of that magnitude.

absolutely correct! 16-18-1 after 35 games will guarantee a coaching change and selling of vets at the deadline.

Eh, I wouldn't be so sure.

Also, going 5 - 6 probably puts them outside of the playoffs.

apples-oranges

That was then, this is now.

If you use the "didn't trade them for Weber" argument as the benchmark, you'll never make a trade again.

He didn't trade both for Weber. It's possible he moves one or the other. I hope he doesn't unless the return is a good.

If he's NOT trading from the young core (the "strength" of the team), that really leaves only one place for change.....

I get the feeling they loose both to the penguins and bruins...both are playing great.
