Who do you like on that list for Couts?
- NickTheKid87

I will admit coots straight up is not getting top young dman like oel. We would have to overpay for that type dman with coots plus... I would do it but i wouldn't give up coots for say bogosian. Not even straight up. It's a great debate and many people have different views on these players and what they are willing to give up but in truth in reAlity is chances of a big blockbuster deal probably less than 10%.

Boba Fett was set to hit free agency, until his tragic career ending... um, injury. He would've gotten a boatload.

Worst trade in history was when Watto sent Anakin Skywalker to the Jedis for nothing. That's why you don't bet on pod racing.

Crosby-1st overall
Stamkos-1st overall
Malkin-2nd overall
Giroux-22nd overall
Tavares-1st overall
Getzlaf-19th overall
Thornton-1st overall
Lecavalier-1st overall
Toews-3rd overall
Staals-2nd overall
Kopitar-11th overall
Richards-24th overall

Zetterberg-7th round
Datsyuk-6th round
Bergeron-2nd round
Pavelski-7th round
B. Richards-3rd round

It works both ways. Sometimes you find diamonds in the rough, sometimes you don't. Flyers haven't been particularly keen or patient to develop young D men either.

- NickTheKid87

Actually is doesn't work both ways. Who on that list is a big two way center taken after the 1st round, let alone top 10 picks (Carter and Kopitar were drafted at 11 so not quite top 10) Getzlaf is the latest one at 19 in a ridiculously loaded draft. Bergeron is bigger than I thought at 6-2 so you could also throw him in there as one guy (2003 was a crazy draft). Those other guys are all around 5-11. I didn't say you could find good forwards later in the draft, I said big skilled center like Couturier typically go top 10.

Look at the stats this year. Top 20 scoring defensemen: 6 1st rounders out of 20. Top 20 scoring centers: 17 in the 1st rd out of 20: 14 of those 17 were in the top 10 picks with Kopitar(11), Getzlaf(19), and Koivu (21) the others.

It's not just a lack of patience though. If it were, we would see some Flyers drafted dmen blossom into #1D's on other teams. There seems to be some fundamental flaw in the scouting of young dmen in the organization.
- phillydentist

The Flyers do seem to have an organizational mindset that if everything is equal, they take a forward, at least in the first round.

I think it's more about replacing Timonen after next year than anything else.
- NickTheKid87

Well, there's not a need to do that until summer of 2014

That is partly because teams view taking a big forward as less of a risk than a defenseman.

Forwards are generally easier to project, and usually develop faster, so you see a quicker return on the pick. There's a lot of draftniks that feel Sean Jones is the best prospect in the draft and at the same time tell you there's a good chance he goes 3rd, behind Drouin and MacKinnon, because of position.
