I though we traded danny boy for this

- Philly1980

Do you think they would trade Briere for a Shattenkirk jersey. It would be a nice addition to homers collection

I'd say overpayment for Brown.

Besides, the Oilers have so many young kids, do they really need the draft picks?

- johndewar

I'm leaning toward overpayment for Brown but at the same time, EDM needed a guy like him so maybe not.

Speaking of Gagne jerseys.....I was at the Washington game last week and I wonder how long it took some poor intern to get the boxloads of Gagne jerseys out of storage to feature at the Fan Zone stores.
- johndewar

Good question. I really don't know what happens to those jerseys that don't sell on clearance. It's like what happens to all the sc champions hats that are done up for the team that loses game 7? I picture kids in a South American country wearing the hats playing soccer on a dirt field lol

Didn't get a chance to watch the highlights. I was just surprised they didn't kill the Habs. However, price is really coming into his own IMO, can't be surprised i guess

If the NHL cellar-dwelling Columbus Blue Jackets want to turn things around, they might look at drafting young Canadians.

Is that Don Cherry or Pierre?

I think the bottom line is that although their record is improved. They're a talented team who is getting by on their offensive talent. But they simply are a very average team at best. Hopefully with some practice time it will improve. But they aren't very good right now.
- MJL

That's been my high-level summary all season. Silver lining: it's mostly because the young guys are still learning. Once they get some time under their belts things should improve fairly dramatically.

Is there any update on MAB? Not that I think he could come back to the NHL this year but some sign of progress would be nice.. Really seems like concussion injuries have taken over the past few years

Interesting article.

- Philly1980

NHL teams have long underestimated the talent and potential of players born in the second half of the year and tend to overlook them in favor of relatively older players.

That is exactly the opposite of what they ought to do, said Robert Deaner of Grand Valley State University. For any given spot in the draft, players born in the first three months of the year are more likely to be successful than those born in the second half of the same year.

I read something like this a few months ago, basically it stated that kids born early in the year get into programs alot earlier than the kids born in the second half of the year. Same type of thing with kids that get into the jr draft, born on 8/31 eligible for this year, 9/1 sorry see you next year. Its not an absolute, but it kind of makes sense.

Correction ... they are a offensively talented team getting by on the play of Bryzgalov.
- Philly1980

There's a lot of truth in that statement.

Is it a bad environment for flyers fans or is it because they don't tend to win? Lol
- Hextall271

opposing fans around here are horrible people and he just can't stand to be around them

i can ignore it in order to attend a live game but he just can't take it any more

So, Meszaros might have had a set back, but Matt Read is out there doing everything, wearing a regular jersey and taking part in all facets of practice.
- Jsaquella

GAH! Great news on Read but Mezzy! C'mon man... We need you!
Any word on what the setback is? Timmy P throw a banana peel in front of him? He threw out his back going through Bryz's star wars comics?
His girlfriend twisted him into a pretzel?

Completely understand then. Last year in Boston my gf went to get beer. She was wearing a jvr jersey and some big fat moron got right in her face and yelled at her. If I was there I woulda kicked him in the shin and ran for my life lol.

Seriously, she was not impressed and is very excited to be a home side fan on Thursday night!

Some of that might depend on where you sit in an opposing arena.

Sitting in the lower bowl is probably a good idea, no matter what the opposing venue.

Does Mathers have any offensive upside whatsoever? Is there an offensive skill he brings to the table that would enable him to hold down an NHL job?
- johndewar

Very modest offensive skills. He's a converted defenseman. But he does skate well for a big guy.

Crappy about mean but holy crap on Read. He is way ahead of schedule. I wonder if its one of those he can't do any damage but just has to manage the pain things and will play through. The guy is awesome!

He should make the permanent jump to the AHL when his JR season ends, right?

He skates and works out on his own but is not yet considered symptom free. He's had three concussions within the last calendar year -- a span of less than 30 games played -- and the Flyers want to take every precaution at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he's shut down for the remainder of the season, but that's just my own speculation.

Hey this guy skates fairly well...but given the need for "smart players" I am not sure he'd fit with Philly's needs.
