Unless you honestly expect an insider to tell you exactly who gave them information (something that none of them do by the way because it's a perfect way to burn bridges) you have to go on the reputation of the insider and Andy Strickland is among the best out there. Pretty easy to see if you can read between the lines, which some people are really having trouble with.

"I'm told..." is a device, much like "it says here" (The Toronto Sun guys love that one) or "sources say" which a writer uses to give creedence to what he is about to suggest, when what he is about to suggest is either likely to be true, or not likely to be legally questioned or libellous if untrue, but which he can not prove.

Pretty basic journalistic technique.

Another basic technique is, when you have a story, you say the story, you don't say what might be the story.

ie - if he knows Komisarek asked for a trade, he'd say Komisarek asked for a trade. Doesn't have to reveal his source, just has to say it. But he doesn't know tthat, so he said what he said in hopes that readers would assume he knows something that he doesn't.
