Maybe Harry Z and Matt Cooke can form a new League!

I don't recall anyone saying he was the "dirtiest player in the league" or "deserving of a lifetime ban". Link?

Also, as you admitted, Z left his feet and hit Lundin square in the face. If he doesn't leave his feet or lunge the way he does, it's a good, clean hit - and Lundin is likely winded, but OK. The fact he upped the damage in such a reckless manner would suggest that he was clearly head hunting in this case. He's got a great hit lined up by playing within the rules - the fact he leaves his feet would make him a head hunter (even if he doesn't have a prior history of it).

- TreeSens

Lets not forget... The lunge was in anticipation of a big hit. HarryZ is several inches shorter, and over 15 lbs lighter. Lundin did drop his head, putting himself in a vulnerable position. I think with or without the lunge, Lundin is looking at a concussion. Also, in the video it's clear that HarryZ stopped striding and glided into the hit - something Shanahan will account for. I still think the intent was to make a good clean hard hockey hit, unlike Alfies intent in thecross-check to Rinaldos head which was a blatant intent to injure.

One thing I do not understand from the leage - why is a elbow to the face of a player by someone with no prior history of suspensions any different than say a Matt Cooke who does it? Isn't it the exact same action? Why does 1 merit more suspention time that the other. The league needs to punish the action, not the player.

Don't like the sens, not a big (okay so I'm a leafs fan, obviously I dislike the sens more, but Paul Mclean certainly has no business being anywhere but in the coach of the year category) flyers fan, don't know what the first hit is doing on your page but the 2nd is very suspend able, however how bout Alfies play? VERY suspend able as well.
BTW never got the chance but happy birthday, you are still my favorite blogger on this site

It only makes sense to punish a repeat offender harsher then someone who does something for the first time. The player is who commits the action.

MJL, I think what he was trying to say was... The flipside - Should elbowing Timmo (ie. or similar relatively clean player) vs elbowing Rinaldo or Cooke be a factor in Shanahans ruling. The theory is that Rinaldo or Cooke probably have it coming.

Reading it again, I don't think that's what he's saying at all. My read on it is that he's saying who committed the foul should have no bearing on the punishment.

What is being said is a spade is a spade and an elbow is an elbow no matter who throws it or how many times it is thrown it is still an elbow. Bottom line until the actual infractions are all judged the same regardless of offender stars will get away and grinders will pay. A good example is Bens cross check the other night.

Let's reverse that cross check and have Benn put down to the ice. Do you think a fourth line scrub would only get 10,000 for cross checking Jamie Benn?

Or is that also the double standard of Brendan Shanahan.

Star players will always have a special exception.

Look at Evgeni Malkin. The guy slew footed Paul Mara twice on the same shift and got nothing. Ovechkin threw hits like the Zolnierczyk hit routinely. Neither ever faced more than slaps on the wrist.

Look at yesterday. Zolnierczyk will likely get 2 or 3 games suspension, while Daniel Alfredsson won't even face a fine.

For the same reason repeat offenders in criminal court get longer sentences than first-time offenders: deterrent. First time DUI, get a suspension and a fine, 2nd time, jail time (in Canada anyhow). Sheesh, is that really that difficult to figure out?

Flyers fans will be crying it was a clean hit, actually that both were clean hits.
Of course I've never meet a Flyers fan in my life that wasn't a knuckle dragger.

If you would actually take the time to read the Flyers threads. The overwhelming amount of Flyers fans think the hit in the Ottawa game was a bad hit, and he should be suspended for it. But why take the time to find that out. Just lump all fans into one large group.

Wait.. this has go to be a joke, right? haha

Considering how many careers Cooke has ended and ruined, I don't think you have ANY place to talk... lol

Not to mention, how about those shots to the head Neal was giving last year? Or the slew footing by Malkin... how about how 3 Penguins always jump a guy from behind when he gets into the crease?

Yup.. these scumbag Flyers...

Seriously? Another trolling post?... try actually educating yourself, and you'd see that 90% of Flyers fans are saying the suspension is well-deserved.

I'm perplexed - are people just trolling, or are they really this stupid? lol

I don't care about what the league thinks and I'm no way a Flyer fan but I actually liked the hit and didn't think anything was wrong with it. Yes he left his feet for a second but it was for a micro-second (I think he just did that so he wouldn't get knocked over because he's a smaller player and Lundin was skating towards him). I don't think he was head-hunting or wanted to hurt him and if Lundin wasn't staring at the pass he just made and kept his head up he might of saw Zoln and just jumped out of the way.

I'd love to know who the dbag is that came up with the term "left his feet or leaving his feet!" How exactly does one leave their feet? Last time I checked there aren't any footless hockey players skating around the ice! How about leaving the ice or skates coming off the ice or something of the sort? Would make a lot more sense!

Right...or we could pull an Edmonton and suck year after year to stockpile as many number one draft picks as possible, yet continue to do nothing with them because defensemen and goaltenders aren't essential to winning at all!

AWWWW! You're so cute...I guess as an Edmonton fan you are just tired of being relevant only twice a year-at the draft lottery and when Tambellini steps to the podium to grab another consecutive top pick.

Ok wait let me get this straight... a hit which most if not all flyer fans deemed to be outside of the rules and worthy of a suspension, is a hit which you say has nothing wrong with it. I'm literally stunned. Where have you been the past few years when head shots have been a hot topic that the NHL AND players alike want removed. This is a by the book definition of what NOT to do. But hey, its all Lundin's fault for not keeping his head up. Next time a player jumps, lunges and makes full contact to Kovalchuk's head leaving him concussed on the ice.. remember what you said here, 'theres nothing wrong with it'.
